Update on the surgeon who left his patient on the operating table to cash a check. He's in jail now, and found religion.[More:]The descriptions of how he practices his new religion are so over the top it seems cliched; personally, I'm not buying it. The real test will be when he gets out.

Also, how can he be Orthodox when he's gay?! (Very deceptive photograph used by the Globe, shame on them.)

But I'm glad to see that both he, and the author, are admitting that yeah, it was drugs. The original story did acknowledge that there was a problem, but sort of minimized it. Pissed me off.

Yeah, I get irritated at stories like these, sorry.
Maybe he doesn't consider himself gay any more. What he feels inside, who knows?

I'm amazed that a surgeon got an actual pay check and not electronic deposit.

Heh, you'd be surprised.

Sounds like he substituted a "serious drug problem" with another all-consuming addiction, "work(ing) to follow hundreds of commandments governing all aspects of life".

The best line is the last one, by his (most obvious) victim: ‘Fine. You feel better now? Because I don’t.’

No matter how much we "change", we are all the sum total of everything we have done in our lives, bad AND good. And one of the biggest bullshit sayings going around is that "you regret most the things you didn't do."

But if he uses the delusional line “The one thing I do know is that if I use again, I’ll die.” to keep clean, it makes it more likely that when/if he lapses and doesn't die, he'll go all the way back to the way he was at the time when he thought it was working for him.
