FIRE IT UP! Parliament Funkadelic in 1979. Giant skulls smoking joints, cowboy hats and angel wings. It doesn't get any funkier than this.[More:]

Some more live awesomeness:

Cosmic Slop (1976) HOLY SHIT.

Mothership Connection (1976)

Maggot Brain (1979) Not Eddie Hazel, still pretty good
And then there's my favorite random guys dancing to "Atomic Dog" video.

I loved this stuff. I did a funk radio show one time and no one listened :(

You need to wear a feather-trimmed sombrero and a diaper while you play it.

But you should also do another funk-themed show. Especially if it's guitar-y and very loud, like Funkadelic.

I'm more a Funkadelic than a Parliament kinda guy, but holy shit is this great: Flashlight (1978)

I love funk too. In the UK we had our own funk bands in the late 70s and 80s, which were a little poppier than the American bands.

Level 42 - The Sun Goes Down (amazing bass playing)

Beggar & Co - Somebody Help Me Out

Light of the World - Swinging

Hi Tension - Hi Tension

Shakatak - Night Birds

Linx - You're Lying

And, the BEST BRITISH FUNK SONG EVER ... Freeez with Southern Freeze.

Just listening now to The Sun Goes Down, it's time-stamped with the line "I don't wanna go to war". When it was written in 1982, we were at war with Argentina in the Falklands/Malvinas.

Yeah, Clinton and company, they were really something else. I saw P-Funk around this time, in Boston. Great show, over the top fun!

I like that stuff now in the same way I like disco... in that I hated disco at the time and hated this stuff. Now it seems so.... comforting? to see that even the music I didn't like was still good music. Is there any chance I'll look back at hip-hop in 20-30 years with the same nostalgia?

Well, twenty years ago is 1990. How do you feel about People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted and '911 is a Joke'?
