A Strange and Wonderful CD made it's way into my possession A co-worker's uncle was involved, in some way.[More:]

It is an assemblage of monologues by U. Utah Phillips, whom I got to see a few times, set to background music by Ani DeFranco. Here are a couple samples. There are other tracks that are more side-splittingly funny, also.
Definitely second the appreciation, that's a great album. You'll also want to find his album We Have Fed You All a Thousand Years, which is the best collection of old Wobbly music you'll find today, interspersed with wonderful anecdotes. It was a live show, and he stops at times to teach the audience the lyrics. So much fun. The Telling Takes Me Home is probably the most available and accessible album with his original songs. And if you like his storytelling, every song on the 4-disc collection Starlight on the Rails has an introduction by Utah.

I've seen Ani live a few times, and she's great, but it would have been fantastic to see them together live. Was your co-worker's uncle involved in the making of the CD, or the passing it along to you?

Fellow Workers is worth hearing too. Dig this version of 'Pie in the Sky'--everybody sounds like they're having a great time, which is one of my favorite qualities in a live music recording.

Well Utah Phillips passed away a few years ago, so you will not see him any time soon (I hope).

Apparently the uncle was involved somehow with Phillips.

And ironically I have yet to develop an appreciation for Ani, as cool as she seems to be.

Yeah, I read that he passed in 2008. Some friends love Ani, so I've heard her for years, but I've only seen her live with my wife in the last few years. I've grown to really like her music, but I love her live. She has enough music that you can skip a few songs if they're not your thing, yes still find something to fit your style/mood. Or maybe she's not your kind of artist. Either way, I'm glad you got the CD! I hope you get to hear some interesting stories about Phillips from the uncle.
