"I wish you would come down to the jail and see me. it will be to your interest to come and see me." Letter from William "Billy the Kid" Bonney to Governor Lew Wallace, the man who had recently reneged on his promise to pardon the outlaw.→[More:]

Shortly thereafter, Bonney escaped from jail after killing two guards. (It would appear the Governor ((wisely)) never took The Kid up on his offer.)

Fun fact: One of my colleagues served several years as the director of the Lew Wallace Study and Museum. There is a nifty, forward-thinking youngish group of museum workers in that region who call themselves "the Crawfordsville Mafia."
