Facebook question - no drama, I promise. Married people, if you've changed your last name IRL, do you hyphenate it on Facebook so people can find you? Or what do you do?[More:]While browsing through my high school classmates I noticed that some people have an alternate name in parentheses beside their main name, like so (last names were brushed out). I assume one is her married name, one is her maiden name. How do you do this? I don't want to hyphenate my names just so I appear in searches, but this would be great.
I am so over facebook.

If you go to Account Settings, there's a place to put in an alternate name that's not going to show but will link to your profile in search, so that if you have a maiden and married name, people can find you by both.

I changed my name and on Facebook, it's First Name Maiden name Last Name, no hyphens. That way people who know me by my maiden name can easily find me.

TPS gets best answer.

I don't like the MaidenName LastName thing in my case because they're both so freaking long. It confuses me a bit when others do it because I don't know if that's how they want to be addressed IRL or if it's just a facebook thing.

And yeah, special-k, I can't say that I really ENJOY facebook, it's just a thing that people expect me to have, like an email address or a phone.

I tend to assume when I see First Maiden Last that it's just for FB, versus when I see First Maiden-Last I assume that's how they want to be addressed in real life. You know what they say about assumptions, though.

I go by First Maiden Last but I think I will change it to First Last under account settings as TPS described, if they will allow me to do so.

Yeah, I am with amro. Seeing that structure on facebook doesn't make me think that the person hyphenates in real life.

I was hyphenated already anyway.

If you haven't seen someone in a long time (and therefore don't know their married name), it's nice to have the maiden name right out there in the main profile. The alternate-name part would befuddle me if I were doing a search for my old friend Jody Shoemacher and the search results came back saying Jody Brown.

If you fill in an alternative name, you can have that alternative name shown on your profile, too. (By default, that option box is checked, so the alt. name will be shown.)

In the last month or two, I was contacted by a friend of my parents and a relative, both looking for contact information for my parents. My parents moved recently, and it seems they haven't done much to update the less-than-immediate family and friends on this. I'm glad I can be a conduit for re-connection, so Facebook is good for that. And I think a friend from college will be sending me a Christmas card, because he asked for my address. Odd, but intriguing in a fun way.

(Plus, I have a minor addiction to Cafe World. It's not a good thing, just another little distraction.)

I didn't change my name however some folks know me as his girl so I have the oddly spinned First His Mine.

... Because I enjoy twisting conformity.
