I am sad, yet I am happy. I am sad that my local comics shop is going out of business, but I am happy that he is selling stuff for pennies on the dollar.[More:]I picked up ALL the trade paperbacks of DMZ and Y the Last Man. (That's, like, 20 books right there.) And two hardcover volumes of Beanworld. And a collection of Grant Morrison's Animal Man. And three volumes of Sandman: Mystery Theater and two of Transmetropolitan. And a huge stack of loose comics. And Pocket Full of Rain and I Killed Adolf Hitler by Jason, who is awesome. All for less than $180. That's like $500 worth of comics! But next week my comics store will be no more. Alas. I felt like a vulture.
This on the same day when Borders and Barnes & Noble report substantial quarterly losses and the future of Borders in the UK is at best dismal. I also read today (link long lost) that paper stock last quarter increased on average 60% in the US. Will today's generation be the last to remember deadwood media?

"Bittersweet" is the word you're looking for. I hate it, too.. when you took me to that shop I thought the guy (Steve?) was cool and I wish he'd made it.

I'm glad you got a good stash of stuff to read out of it, though. I'll be curious to hear what you think of Transmetropolitan. The concept fascinated me, but I barely got four issues in before it irritated me so much I couldn't read it anymore. I LOVED Beanworld! The rest I'm not familiar with.

Do they have a web presence?

Yeah, it was Steve's place. I'd forgotten taking you there. And he really is a great guy. I hope he goes on to bigger and better things.

I have the first two trades of Tramsmetropolitan, and loved them. It's Warren Ellis at his best/ worst, depending on one's perspective. It's not something I want to read a lot of at once, but it's a damn fine tart and druggy palate cleanser.

ooga_booga: not really, but he's on Twitter @astrobraincomic, and he's really looking to sell his remaining stock. He's got a GORGEOUS clothbound reprint of Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein that I just couldn't justify buying, even at 50% off. And all sorts of other stuff.

He has a Kraven the Hunter resin sculpture that is SO tacky, SO awful, so perfectly fanboyishly terrible, that I may offer him $20 for it, just for the lulz.

There were a number of bookshop closures in my neighborhood this summer, so I know where you're coming from. I've discovered that when a favorite store of mine is having a 30% sale, it's cause for unqualified rejoicing - but a 40% sale is reason to despair, because it means that the store won't see out the month.
