Just saw the Nightmare Before Christmas on the big screen! In 3D![More:]I'd actually seen it once before, when it first came out on video, I then just half-watched it with a bunch stoned goth-into-musical-hippies, and I wasn't all that impressed.

But it was really good, and I even loved the music (which I hadn't really appreciated before, back when I had a weird chip on my shoulder about musicals, but that's another story).

Favorite audience moment: when the 3D previews started, everyone was quite loudly oohing-and-ahhing. When the previews ended and the audience was finally quiet, someone yelled out "We're all DORKS!" and we all responded with laughter and cheers.

The 3D "remastering" was impressive overall, but it was no Coraline. Sometimes the visual planes didn't match up smoothly -- e.g., Jack's fingers were WAY in front of him, while his hands were just a little in front of his torso. And though some scenes were really nice in 3D, the 3D treatment actually didn't seem to add a lot overall -- it was a film whose shots were made without 3D effects in mind.

But, still, it was a fabulous time, and quite a thrill to see the characters leap from the screen.
Wow, this sounds fantastic! I'm not sold on 3-D, but there's a whole lotta get-off-my-lawn in my resistance: I remember the late-1970s/early 1980s attempt to make stuff 3-D when I was a kid, and it was so half-assed and sad. Also, the 3-D glasses did not fit over my enormous actual glasses.

My favorite memory of watching "Nightmare before Christmas" with some children who had begge me to bring it home for them: at Oogie-Boogie's appearance, the little boy turned to me and said shakily, "My stomach's getting all squeezy."

We turned it off and watched something else. But that was a handy phrase in my social circle for describing a movie that was too scary or too emotionally intense: "My stomach's getting all squeezy."
