Maybe the stairs are misproportioned? (There's a step at my homie's place that is just a bit too tall for the width and everyone always trips on it.)

sperose's link reminds me of a place I lived in Amsterdam. The stairs curved around about 120 degrees, kind of like a spiral staircase at the top. The depth of the tread went to zero on one side, so the steps were triangular, with the pointy tips being lined up vertically.

If guests had been partying it wasn't unusual to hear some thumping and cursing after they left (despite the warning.)

Sorry to hear about your mishap The Whelk.

no rpoblem, it's just I JUST got over the bruise from hitting those stairs before AND I did a near twist of my ankle on them a few months ago so, gaaah.

Dutches houses are such clever little contraptions, all hidden drawers and odd starcases.

in many older homes, especially in the house there is one unusually proportioned step which is meant to trip up burglars.

I got one of them steps, but I don't think my SO built it like that with this reason in mind.
