Ask MeCha. Where to stay in NYC at Christmas?[More:]

It's not me coming to town (oh how I wish, NYC bunnies!), but a nice cow-orker of mine.

She and her parents are looking to get rooms in a nice (4 but not 5-star) hotel for a week. They can spend about $5700 total, for three people.

They are going to do all the touristy things: shopping, Rockefeller Plaza, Broadway show and want a "nice, clean place" to lay their heads.

I'd appreciate any advice!
Hotels that I think would be cool:
Hotel on Rivington-sleek and modern,
W hotel-modern but more standard,
Roger Williams hotel- cute and colorful,
Essex House is pretty but maybe a little too fancy?

Stynx's parents stay at the DoubleTree in Times Square, and always like it. They get the suites, which I think are a little nicer than the regular rooms.

New York Palace FTW. Perfect location, good size rooms for NYC, fancy and old school but not too fussy.

Uh, the Essex house is where I just was. I really liked the Hotel Beacon when I was looking for my first place here---and it's across the street from Fairway!
I was given attitude at the W Union Square.
