OMG Office Drama!!! [More:] I felt like I was in the middle of an office sitcom today. Basically, it was like a game of phone booth- you know, where a message is passed from person to person? Only it wasn't a message, it was blame for some activities that hadn't occurred on time.

It was rather humorous to me, because I didn't get caught in the chain. But basically, an engineer didn't get something done, so he blamed quality. The chief engineer took it up with quality manager, who upon a little checking, decided that it was really shipping & receiving's fault, so he went to the program manager and made sure he knew that it wasn't quality's fault, then the program manager went off on the shipping & receiving guy, who, in turn, blamed.... the engineer who started it all.

The funny thing is that I happened to be within earshot (or at times talking to the victim of the blame game) at each step as the blame was handed off from one person to the next. It was almost surreal.
Taking responsibility for an error or delay is hard but it really make everyone's life easier if you do.

I see this happening all the time (in other teams) at work. In my team, I expect people to take the blame for their screw-ups and then we move on and I model this by readily taking the blame if something is my fault. It just (as gomichild says) makes everyone's life easier if you do that. I think, in many situations, people don't have this environment so are ready to blame someone else because they are going to cop shit over it forever. But, if people keep making the same screw-up over and over again, then I get angry and say bad things to them.
