Ask Mecha: Need to fix my scanner's ADF.[More:]It's an HP 5550C, love the thing, I think I broke a piece of the ADF mechanism when removing a paper jam. My computer-repair friend says just get a new one, which I may do if that's truly the best option. Has anyone ever used these guys, or a similar service, with success? Any other recommendations? They might do other good things like clean the ADF window, right? Thanks all!
No experience with these guys, but... Count me in the "totally skeptical of all electronics repair services" category. About all I've ever seen them do is overcharge for running a head-cleaning tape in a VCR or reformatting a hard drive.

You could probably replace this yourself, if you are handy. It looks like the ADF is a user-replaceable part.
See this page for troubleshooting common ADF problems. The most common ADF problem that I have encountered is when paper slips and goes through slanted (and so catches). If this is the symptom very common on HP printers and scanners), use an emery board to rough up the rollers a little. Otherwise, you can probably order another ADF assembly from HP (although this may cost you somewhat).
