1. Nujabes - "Voice of Autumn" (Hydeout Productions 2nd Collection) a nice chilled out intro to any list, goes well with the rain dripping down the windows

2. Radiohead - "Paranoid Android" (OK Computer) well I gotta say that followed the last cut perfectly. I generally prefer Radiohead's alien abduction songs to their alienation ones, but this has an operatic overture feel to its structure that sucks me in.

3. Washboard Sam - "How Can I Play Fair" (1940) when you won't play fair yourself; I done tried to love you mama, and you loving someone else.

4. Derek & The Dominoes - "Bell Bottom Blues" (Layla and other Assorted Love Songs) for some reason this was on every karaoke machine I encountered in Japan, and damn it if I didn't sing it every time drinking parties turned to singing ones.

5. The Supremes - "Can't Hurry Love" (1966) do you remember when Whoopi Goldberg sang this in Jumpin' Jack Flash? I do.

6. LL Cool J - "Ill Bomb" (G.O.A.T.) is proof that Ladies Love was still poppin' in Y2K, golden age of flow.

7. Otis Redding - "A Waste of Time" (The Immortal Otis Redding) from his second posthumous album. There's never been anyone else like him.

8. Led Zeppelin - "Trampled Under Foot" (Physical Graffiti) this is one of their songs wherein you can trick people who don't know the title into thinking it's called "Talkin' 'Bout Love." "Black Dog" works from the other direction: I actually witnessed a kid trying to prove he knew from Zep saying, "Oh yeah, 'Black Dog,' it goes 'Black Dog, black dog baby, you black dog..." and gamely snapping his fingers until we turned away.

9. The Atons - "Yellow Ribbon" (Home Schooled: The ABC's of Kid Soul) just outside of Baltimore a teenager chats with his friends over a funk simmer before it all boils over into this tuneless rendition of the classic "Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round That Old Oak Tree." Gotta be heard to be believed.

10. Jay Z - "So Ghetto" (Vol.3 Life and Times of S. Carter) damn skippy that's DJ Premier, ain't nobody lace tracks like Preem.

11. Pixies - "The Holiday Song" (Come On Pilgrim) everybody quick jump up and down and sing! Pretend you know the words if you don't, that's what I'm doing!

12. ZZ Top - "Francene (Spanish Version)" (1972) that's right, sung in Spanish this hit from the Rio Grande Mud album is just as hot. There's a live version of this floating around.

Everything I Thought Was Funny I Know Now Was Cruel - Rob Clarkson: An Aussie treasure who really should've had more success than he got. One of his better earlier songs. Awesome lyrics, including:

"When I find myself in times of trouble,
Your brother Harry is never, ever, around,
I like Harry a lot,
He's always had good advice for me, I've found.

He says you'd better save your energy,
And start to look out for yourself,
'cos when the going gets tough
The tough piss off and leave you by yourself."

"Track 05" - Some Jamaican rocksteady. I'd guess 70s. Going by the chorus, I'd guess it's called "Wipe the Tears", or something close.

Space Shanty - Leftfield: Yeah, it's probably not the best tune off Leftism, but that's a pretty solid album. Sitting in that 'Intelligent Techno' lounge unsure whether it should chat about Proust, or just neck the last couple of pills and go mental in the main room.

War - Bob Marley. The version off Natural Mystic which is cool, but not as good as any of the live versions I have. I gather this is the track which engendered a couple of lawsuits about writing credits.

Mellow Mood - Judy Mowatt: Tribue to Bob Marley. Not fantastic, but a nice follow-up to War.

Come on Home - Franz Ferdinand: Am I hip yet? Franz Ferdinand always make me feel like they should've been around during the britpop days. A bit like Interpol.

Comb 60s - Benga: Benga is teh r0xx0r (though the intro on this tune is a little long, imho). That is all.

Public Eye - Gregory Isaacs: Something tells me the ID3 is missing the terms 'dub mix' or similar. Anyway, a nice, unpretentious slab of analog dub.
