MeCha thoughts on the MeFi 10th anniversary party [More:]I don't know what your guys' experiences were like, but I had a total blast. Hats off to StickyCarpet, TPS, styxno, MeFi user vrakatar and several other MeFites who may not read MetaChat who made it a success.

The thing that I liked the most about the party was that even though I didn't have a MeFi account*, I was still welcomed and was able to jump into conversations with people, laugh, drink, dance and just have a good ol' time.

Actually one of my favorite parts of the night was when after throwing a message into a bottle by sending a semi-drunken text/voicemail to Jose Famoso, I was wandering to the keg room an hour or so later and just happened to be the first of the former DumbCo crew to see him come down the stairs and into the space. I happily dragged him over in search of our little crew, surprising first Pips, then Hugh Janus, and finally ascended the fire escape ladder to where jonmc had perched.

It was so good to see everyone hanging out again, and when Pips joined us later, it reminded me of how awesome it was when I first joined MetaChat and how awesome it continues to be.

And how did you spend your 10th?

*And now I'm "TrishaLynn" on MetaFilter. ^_^
TheDonF and I missed all the festivities as we were occupied having a wedding of sorts. More than a year after we got married, we now have exchanged rings in front of friends and family! cmonkey was the master of ceremonies. We are hung over.

That's awesome Specklet, congratulations. Since there was 3 mefite's there, you should hit up mathowie for beer money :)

I don't understand why social gatherings, where the purpose is to "finally" meet and talk with people you've only known online, are always held at places where it's so loud you can't hear anyone talk. :(

Still, it was great to see Eideteker again and others. :)

TrishaLynn, it sounds like a blast! So glad to hear you had a wonderful time!

Specklet, there's not a better reason under the sun to miss the bash. (And you're not alone in that, either: I missed last year's Skee Ball meet-up in part because The Fella and I had just become engaged, and I accidentally planned our wedding to coincide with the original proposed date for MeFi's 10th. Lucky for me, MeFi put it off a week --- uh, the meet-up, not the wedding.)

I'm looking forward to today's Portland, Maine, meet-up! I feared that a family crisis would keep me away, but I think I'll make it. It should be a lot of fun --- it always is!

There were FOUR MeFites are Specklet's and TheDonF's sort-of-wedding, because I was there too. It was fabulous. The famous allotment has to be seen to be believed. I had the most wonderful time. I ate SO much.

I also went to the London meetup on Friday night. I wore my Three Wolf Moon T-shirt, a Lynyrd Skynyrd baseball hat (complete with Confederate Flag detail) and I pushed my hair back behind my ears to resemble a mullet. I had a great time, but I couldn't get near the Wii for all the boys.

Darthduckie and I had a great time at the Pittsburgh Meetup. There were about 15 of us there, just hanging out in the back room of a neighborhood bar drinking beer and chatting. It sounds like the NYC meetup was a little wilder than ours, no dancing or drunken texting but we 'burghers are pretty laid-back.

Jan, with that outfit on you would have fit right into Hough's, the bar that we met-up in, but no one would have known that you were wearing it ironically.
posted by octothorpe 19 July | 11:23
I think when I was working the door at our party, someone came in with the 3 Wolf Moon shirt, too!

(Yeah, I said "working the door." No "back of a bar" for us!)

Hey, I was at the tenth anniversary party, and I didn't see a single one of you! I guess it was just that busy....

Seriously, the Chicago one (hosted by eamondaly) went quite well, although I had to leave early due to coming in from Wisconsin. Met a lot of folks, but I'm not sure if me3dia and eamondaly were the only bunnies around. Most people didn't know about my personal life, so possibly.

Quite a few people got a kick out of my user number on the blue (654, from March 2000!).

One of these days, I'm actually going to successfully make it to a meetup.

Yay NYC! I liked when I complimented someone on their Sockington t-shirt, and it turns out he was the creator of the Sockington twitter! Yay for jscott.

I didn't make it to the 10th anniversary meetup I had planned to attend, New Orleans. I am really bummed I didn't get to go. (I was, however, regularly at my computer following the tweets and Flickr photos as they rolled in.)

Hahahah, fabulous!

Uuuuulllllgggghhhhhhh.... must have been the gin. Good times, though, good times. It was great to see everyone, old friends and new.

Jon and HJ and I are on the porch, recovering. A bloody mary right now would be great.

(you all look a little blurry)

I want to see more photos from the NY meetup!

jayder, I will eat a crawfish for you tonight!!

The meetup last night was fun. I'm kicking myself because I made a shoutout to Chicago and took the picture on my camera, which is a film camera. :( If only there could be a wormhole from eamondaly's neighborhood to the Columns Hotel.

I'm staying with domo and her boyfriend. They are wonderful hosts :) :)

REDHEAD: So, Jason, what's your big project? What are you doing when you're not looking for work?

JASON: I'm looking for a girlfriend.

(redhead starts to laugh)

REDHEAD: I'm afraid I can't help you with that. I actually have one myself.

I had a great time at the Austin meet-up - I drove up from San Antonio so I couldn't get as drunk as some attendees :) (that's freshwater_pr0n I believe)

Our party was so ridiculously awesome I don't even know where to begin, so maybe I won't. The movies and pictures pretty much tell the story.

I've been running on fumes all day today, though: not hungover, just completely and utterly exhausted.

Dallas was big fun. Had 15 I think, and they say Dallas meet ups always fizzle. Hmph, I say! Deja420 made a lovely cake with mefi blue frosting and lovely little beans out of marzipan. After dinner at Nazar's where they took great care of us, belly dancer included, about 8 of us hopped over to the Londoner for loud smokey conversation. It was great to match faces with the names and see how generous and kind everyone was.

Here's a link to my crappy shots on Flickr:

Meat-on-a-stick and whatnot too. I feel hungover cuz I'm so tired, out way past my bedtime. Worth it all. Thanks to Item for getting it started and organized.

Eamon - I can see why you'd be running on fumes today - you had one hell of a full plate on Saturday. Again, thanks for letting MeFi10 commandeer your block for our frivolities. Much awesomeness - and Mrs Slack got to see that my internet friends aren't quite as weird as she feared.

Still, it was great to see Eideteker again and others.

This is becoming a disturbing trend.

Ours was in two parts, both outside. I only made it to the second, but that was spectacular, with an actual OCEAN plus FIRE, MARSHMALLOWS, and BOURBON.

We were able to hear each other talk just fine. And I learned that psho is an acronym.

Oh man, great time in Maine last night. Portland (the real one!) represent!

Miko and I spent a lovely day on the beach at Old Orchard, swam a lot, then trucked on up to the meetup.

This whole "friends on the internets" thing is an amazing thing. Considering that in 2005 I thought y'all were a cult.

had a ball at both London events I attended. The piss-up in Marlybone was great fun and I met some new and old mefites for the first time. The picnic type thing on Sunday turned into supporting Motty at his Gig at Embankment gardens where I think we raised the attendence by 50% (there were only 7 of us!)and some drinks at the fabulous Royal Festival Hall Terrace for the afternoon, all in all, Metafabulous! :)

The Original Portland was great. We're a small crew but we make up for it in quality - and the ambassadors from Beantown added special spice. It was a fun evening and I came away with a renewed appreciation for the very consistent awesomeness of MeFites.

I was scrolling through some pictures, using the tag Mefi10, and about 3 pages in there is a blowjob, with that tag.

Looks like someone had an *extra* good time, or else that user found a way to yoink tags. . .

DC was a good time. Melismata, I know what you mean. Luckily, we were able to find the volume control for the entire club's sound system, and thus were able to have normal conversations. Well, normal volume, anyway.

I'm slightly nervous about whether I came across as too much of a dork, but eh.

Within moments of meeting casarkos, she was telling me about eating the "biggest fucking piece of catfish" she'd ever eaten in her life. That's when I knew I would love her forever.

Also: Don't Stop Believin', MetaFilter.

This was a pure and completely spontaneous moment of unfiltered joy and community. It's probably my favorite moment of the entire weekend. Except for watching MeFite ladies (who I will not name here) get "the bad touch" from a stripper at Larry Flynt's Barely Legal Hustler Club.

Awwwwww, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you guys.

(To be perfectly accurate, it was *s and my sister who ordered the catfish, and I was just trading for pieces of the best fucking fried alligator in the world.)
