I'm an idiot. →[More:]
I never did make it to my interview today.
First, I had hem problems. The temporary hem tape I bought for my new pants and have used successfully in the past just did not work this time. Maybe it was the fabric, but the cuffs kept falling down as I walked and I had to stop at Queensboro Plaza to retape and pin them, while several 7 trains came and went. (Serves me right for getting a "D" in sewing in middle school.)
At this point, it was already getting late. Then, I got lost. Twice. First, trying to find the blasted G train, and later walking the wrong way on Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn.
When a nice, if smelly, fish monger finally pointed me in the right direction, I was hot and sweaty and forty minutes late. So when I got back to the subway entrance, I said, in the wise words of one of Jon's favorite homeless booksellers,
Hell with it, and got on the train (the L instead of the G -- takes longer, but it's much easier, and there's an elevator at Union Square).
On the bright side: I bumped into Hugh Janus on his way to his own interview looking very sharp in his suit (hope your interview went better than mine, HJ); I saw the biggest lobsters I've ever seen in a tank at the fish monger's -- Popeye claws; I picked up yummy Chinese food for six bucks for lunch on the way home; I only cried a little; and I still have my job at my current high school to go back to in the fall.
When I knew I was going to be late, I tried calling a couple of times, but I couldn't get through. And the email with directions my contact said she'd send yesterday never did arrive. I usually make dry runs in situations like this, knowing my propensity for getting lost (I've given up and gone home in the past when I can't find places), but there was so little time this time. They called me yesterday to come in today, and it was my birthday yesterday (I did have a lovely birthday).
Well, maybe it's just as well. I can always try again next spring, if I want (the open transfer period for teachers runs from May until the beginning of August). And all my books and supplies and such are at my old school. This new school did look promising, though. And it would have been nice to have a fresh start, with what seemed like a more collaborative and positive administration and atmosphere (based on my research about the school). Like I said, I'm an idiot. I think I'll take a nap.
