I'm so excited! Today, my Ma & Pa Logs arrived! [More:]

First let me just thank the MetaChatter that linked to the log kits some time ago. I can't remember who it was but thank you for introducing me to a fun new project.

So, the logs arrived, via VERY cute UPS man, this morning. This weekend I'll shock them in freezing water and in no time I should have the first of a more or less continuous stream of Shiitake mushrooms growing right in my own home. I'll update with pic as they become available.

WOOO HOO!
Yay continuous shiitakes! This log sounds neat.

Do these work until the end of infinity? Or do they have some kind of works for a year as they're pollenated enough for that long kind of thing.

I just watched a special on Korean food and one segment highlighted a mushroom farmer who had to keep injecting his logs with the spore solution after every harvest. Just wondering.

The logs I bought are fully inoculated with shiitake spawn mature enough to fruit. From the paperwork that came with the logs:

The shiitake mycelia cells are growing constantly, replacing the wood cells with their own cells. The cells need air, water, and light to grow. Their fruit cycle is 8 weeks, meaning that every two months you can force-fruit [the log] by immersing it in ice water (shocking) and soaking for 24 hours.

By keeping it moist, in between shocking, the spore just keeps growing, for up to two years. After that, all bets are off.

As for the Korean farmer, maybe by injecting after each harvest, s/he guarantees a large harvest.

I love this idea. When I finally get a house and my own greenroom, this is going in the mix. Ty!
