I'm breaking out my Seeds albums today for Sky Saxon. RIP. [More:]I don't think the Seeds made a whole great album, but they made some great songs that hold up better than many of their contemporaries. When I first picked up Nuggets so many years ago "Pushin Too Hard" was one of the songs that kicked my ass the most.
He worked on some of that Father Yod stuff, too.

That obit doesn't do the band's third album, "Future," justice at all. It's one of the great lost classics of psychedelic pop - experimental, childlike, lysergic and just a great listen from start to finish:

This album is a trip, not because it reflects the ideas captured in the Peter Fonda film of the same name, but because a band had the audacity to experiment with record company money and make something so noncommercial and playful...Saxon writes in the inner-sleeve essay "Originations of the Flower Generation" "...The farmer lives by the elements alone, the sun, the rain, and the earth, but the earth needs its seeds to sow the flower generation of the leaf...." It's heady stuff...the Sgt. Pepper of the flower-power set, a reinvention of past efforts, but no "Strawberry Fields" or "Day in the Life" to bring it out of its cult niche. Very listenable, highly entertaining, and totally not for the mass audience...
