R.I.P. Chickpea. [More:]

Chickpea Orpington, aged 6 or 7, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday morning after a week-long illness.

Chickpea was born and raised in Davis, CA. She had a lifelong passion for peanuts, cherries, and spaghetti. She was a staunch defender of her property and was known to fiercely chase after scrub jay interlopers. Those who knew her will always remember her gentle disposition and wary curiosity -- friends say no one could give the interrogatory one-eyed chicken stare like Chickpea.

Chickpea is survived by friends Chili and Cracker. She was preceded in death by her longtime companion, Porkchop. She was laid to rest next to Porkchop on the morning of May 26.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, you hug one of your pets today.
Porkchop link went MIA.

Maybe we should make a memorial pasta dish with cherries and peanuts.

I don't have any pets but I'll hug my guitar and offer you condolences. My heart goes out to you, a pet is hard to lose.

I tip a 40 for Chickpea. And by 40, I mean a bottle of scratch. It's a lucky chicken that gets to live to half her age, to say nothing of the happy chicken-ness I assume she got.

We are privileged to share our lives with livestock. They are generous to share with us.

Chickpea lived a long and prosperous life. May all chickens be treated as lovingly as Chickpea. Rest in peace, dear fowl.

Awwww .. I'm so sorry. What a great chicken she was. It is so hard to lose a pet. If we were neighbors I'd be baking up a bunch of stuff for you right now. Hugs.

Thanks y'all. It's okay -- she was old and had a good life, and summers have never been easy on her, so it's good that she checked out before having to suffer through another one. She'd been having respiratory problems for the last week or two. Honestly, I wish she'd gotten it over with sooner, because there wasn't anything I could do for her and it was hard to watch her fade.

So it's fine that she's gone. That's not the hard part.

The hard part is -- if anyone is keeping score, that's three pets lost since November. Blech.

I'm so sorry for your loss, (((mudpuppie))). I'm gonna give everyone here a hug from you.

On preview: losing so many in such a short time is brutal. Take heart in the fact that you've given them good lives while they were with you.

I hope your new chickens live as long and as good lives as Chickpea and Porkchop. You're a good chicken mommy, mudpuppie.

*hugs* I'm so sorry for your loss, mudpuppie. I was thinking you'd lost a few pets recently. I'm thinking good thoughts for you.

Rest in peace Chickpea, and don't let our Evil Willow bully you in the chicken coop in the hearafter. Stare her down, girl!
