22 May 2009

After a couple of days in the hospital, it's nice to be home. Today's the first full day at home after unexpectedly going into the hospital earlier in the week. [More:]

It's probably nothing serious -- the docs seem to think I've likely developed a bit of a stomach ulcer, which for reasons unknown started to bleed earlier this week. The problem that complicated everything is that I have an underlying bleeding disorder that had been diagnosed a few years back (when I bled so badly during my jaw surgery) as hemophilia, but now it seems it's another thing entirely... but what that "thing" actually is, no one has been able to say so far (Von Willebrand Disease seeming to be the obvious front-runner, but that was apparently ruled out as well).

On the up side, apparently there's now an entire research lab at Cedars that's reportedly "fascinated" by my blood. So that's cool, in a True Blood subplot kind of way.

So until that's figured out once and for all (i.e., they know how to properly treat my underlying bleeding), they can't do any procedures to figure out what's up with my stomach. Luckily, it seems to have settled down for now (Nexium is a wonder drug, let me tell you).

Anyway, home feels great. Hospital stays are never fun, but particularly ones that involve two IVs, endless blood tests, prepping for an endoscopy that never actually happens, and a TV that doesn't work on the night of the American Idol finale. But at least I got a lot of reading done; I finished The Corrections (brilliant, hilarious, amazing, loved it) and breezed through Water for Elephants (entertaining story and setting, but not a particularly great novel).
See what happens when I'm away for a few days? I forget how to use MORE INSIDE. Moderators, please hope, etc.

scody, I'm sorry to hear you had to be admitted to the hospital but relieved to hear that you're home. It sounds like you're doing well, all things considered.

I've been meaning to read The Corrections for forever. I'm glad to to hear you liked it.

That sounds horrible scody! But yay for getting some reading done.

Sorry to hear of your ill health and hospital ordeal :( Now you're home I hope you're kicking back with your feet up & taking it easy.

I'd also like this oportunity to propose a moratorium on sickness & injury for all bunnies. Let's all be healthy, people!

I feel for you. I could tolerate hospitals if it wasn't for the horrid food. Maybe I've become..., no correct that, I am a food snob. I have become so accustomed to fresh ingredients cooked just so with my taste for seasonings and condiments, that eating hospital food literally makes me gag. My last few visits, I gave up and told them to just put me on a liquid diet.

Anyway, this isn't about me. I'm glad you are out.

Hee hee... I was on nothing at first (not even liquids, only IV), then they let me have liquids, then they let me have regular food for the last meal before they discharged me. At which point I said, "can I go back to liquids, please?"

Glad to hear you are doing alright Scody! And, it's kinda interesting to BE kind of interesting eh? I remember when I had active sarcoidosis, I had a number of interns hoping I was still symptomatic, and could see their somewhat visible disappointment when finding out I wasn't!

Anyway, glad to hear that you're intact!

There's no place like home. So glad to have your voice back on the Internets. Be well.

Ack, haven't you had enough? So glad you're home and sorry you were taken by uncomfortable surprise. Hope you feel better and better as you luxuriate in those surroundings which are ever and incontrovertibly yours.

"can I go back to liquids, please?"

Once, BP was kind enough to smuggle in some take-out pork lo mein. I owe him for many favors, but for that one act alone, I will never be able to repay. Now, I keep a hospital bag read to grab that includes an assortment of food items, small boxes of cereal especially.

I guess, though, that that trick isn't going to work very well for you.

Welcome back scody... yeah, hospital visits are never that fun, especially that long... and yeah, Kris won, I think that's how you pronounce his name, or is it Chris. :)

You know, scody...there are easier ways to meet an undertaker than unexpectedly dying like that. Try to stay alive for at least three more weeks.

Hope they get things figured out for you soon! In the meantime, take good care of yourself!

Also, go to the New Orleans party so that I may shake your hand and buy you whatever beverage your stomach will accommodate.

As someone who is going through the whole transition from hospital stay to healing at home, welcome back, and take the time to heal. It's never a walk in the park, and I'm glad you're back.

Ohhh, scody! One of our gems! *puts white light around your stomach*

Did they rule out the ulcer bacteria?

Gosh what a drag! I am glad you are out and I hope it all turns out great. What bothers me is the loss of power, or, more to the point, the struggle to hold onto one's autonomy and being informed about decisions, etc etc.

*hug*

Goodness! That's quite a scary episode. Not knowing what's going on is an awful feeling, especially when you're in the hospital. Hope there's some resolution soon and that you get back to wellness very soon. Best wishes!

I'd missed this, too! Ugh, how miserable, scody... glad you are back on your feet, at least, and I hope this gets worked out ASAP.
