I haven't heard from my parents. Should I be worried? My parents got on a plane May 3 to fly to Barcelona and go on a cruise. I haven't heard from them at all, and now feel a bit paranoid. [More:] (They are due back in Canada May 13.) They are 70 years old, but spry. If something calamitous happened, (like they didn't make the boat) surely someone would've contacted us?
I think you're fine. They're not due back for a couple more days yet. Phone calls are expensive*, and no news really is good news. If they don't come *back*, well, then worry.

*And even if they're not so expensive anymore, I'm sure the mindset of "international calls=$$$$$$$" persists.

Yes, even if they have spent loads of money in their travels, they would try and save the $5 U.S. to use the internet or phone...because, well, they are 70 years old and funny like that.

My parents have been on a couple of cruises... it's very expensive to make calls, so they've never called from them. I wouldn't worry about it.

Also the ship made them provide next of kin details, so you or someone would probably have been contacted if something had gone wrong.

Oh I see, that I have also ruined the game...with my non-outing thread. Thanks for reassurances.

They are probably just having a fantastic time and reveling in the moment. If anything bad have happened, you'd have heard about that. Don't worry, they're enjoying their vacay.

Seconding insane phone/internet charges on cruises. My family went on a cruise recently and I did not hear from them the entire time.

Also, if they are stopping at ports, the internet/phone cafes on land may be a bit intimidating for elderly North American types. My father is 70 and game to go in almost any establishment, yet even he was a bit hesitant the few times I ducked into an internet joint during our trip to Europe last year. By Amsterdam though, I had him going into the seediest (not the herb, but the ambiance) coffee shops and other such hangouts that I could find. Never did get him to toke up though. heheh
