09 April 2009

Oh Mecha, it was horrible. [More:] I got to work this morning and found out that the internet was out. I desperately clicked Mecha, Meta, NYT...nothing. nada. I still got my email though *. o_0? Then I tried to call a friend but my cell phone had no reception. ruh roh.

With nothing to distract me, I was left with no other choice but to do work. After a couple of productive hours, I came up with a pretty cool hypothesis to explain the non-linearity in my time series. Go me!

So I decided to take a nice hike through the redwoods (despite the rain) to get myself a greasy slice of pizza. nom. Once I got there, I couldn't pay for it because the cc machines were down and the atm didn't work. bizarre. So I just hiked back, ate my granola bar and got down to some more work.

On the way home, I stopped at a bar to reward myself for all the useful things I did and that's when I found out. Someone cut a set of fiber optic cables thus crippling all communication in 3 bay area counties.

All day long I missed out on the witty tweets. posts on Mecha. Pony requests on Meta. breaking news. Oh the horror.

* turns out I still got email from anyone on my network.
That was me. Sorry. Vendetta against an ex. Didn't mean to affect the rest of you. Sorry. (She was unable to access her precious MySpace page for a whole 18 hours, though. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!)

Gee, thanks a lot pups. I just read a really funny tweet that would be a lot funnier had I read it 8 hours ago. God only knows what else I missed. I hope it was worth it.

Kidding aside, I thought about you when I read about this earlier today, wondered if you were among the lost souls.

Man, with that big stinking dead whale and this outage, you'd think that Santa Cruz was on the edge of apocalypse, no?

Yeah, it really felt like it. I was listening to this thing on the news last night where they were talking about power /communication grids potentially being hacked. I didn't expect something similar happening the very next morning.

I feel for all the people who really needed to be connected. My bartender, for example, was quite upset that they couldn't conduct business* all day with their cc machine being offline. All this from one easily accessible cable being vandalized.

ATT just announced a $100,000 bounty.

I hadn't thought of the whale and this craziness as signs of the coming apocalypse. Great, now I have to watch out for horsemen and locusts!

It did make for a seriously surreal day.

It didn't sound so easily accessible, from what I've heard. It sounded like they needed special equipment to remove the manhole cover and to cut through the thick fiber optic cable.

Mark my words: Inside job! Disgruntled (and possibly laid off) employee(s)!

Also: Not terrorists.

*shivers* the horror....

The same thing happened here on Saturday and my internet wasn't restored until Monday. Although it happened some miles from where I live, it damaged the cable which routes to my local telephone exchange through which my internet is provided. It wasn't too much of a PITA, as I had a busy weekend planned anyway, but there's nothing worse than being in the office with no intarwebs, even the restricted access we are allowed.

It sounds horrible. It seems like a lot of effort for a day of no service.

It's cool that you got a lot done and took a walk through the redwoods.

Huh. I thought you were describing a "backhoe fade", but if this was deliberate deal then whoabuddy.

I might call it terrorism if it was part of a campaign blitz "al ur internetz blngz 2 us" or something. But the irony is that nobody would get it 'cause the tubes were down.

Back in the bad old days, there were regular outages in various lines, so every so often on the mailing lists there would be "where's X?" "Oh, Tennessee is having problems, but you can get to X with Bitnet".

God, I can't believe I just wrote that. Does this mean I have to get a lawn now?

If you really wanted to scare the heebeejeebees out of people, you'd jam the radio stations.

Lysdexic: I remember those days! We would see a bunch of chatters on Masrelay (sp?) suddenly "sign out" at once, then someone would comment, "Bye bye Yale" or something like that. Was the only girl too there for a while. Fascinating social experiment.
