29 March 2009

Foundling Yesterday, on the way home from taking my son out for birthday sushi, I spotted a little black dot staggering right on the white painted line of the freeway.[More:]

I was able to pull over about 100 feet past her, pulled my car as far right as possible, told my son to stay in the car no matter what and sprinted back. By the time I got within 10 feet, she had toddled into traffic so I started waving my arms like a madwoman at oncoming traffic while edging closer. I was afraid she'd see me and make a run for it but as it turns out she's so young she can barely focus beyond a foot or two.

Most cars slowed down. One jackass veered across from the middle lane and tried to run her over. He came so close that all her fur blew forward from the rush of the tire.

The car after that one slowed down, making a traffic break and I snatched her up and ran back to the car. By the time I got to my car, the guy who had made the traffic break had pulled over and we gave each other giant hugs.

As it happened, the very next exit was the one for our veterinarian's office so I swung by there in hopes someone might be working. The office was closed but one of the docs was there and gave her a quick look: no physical damage, eyes are clear and tracking, old enough to eat solids.

I was worried she might not make it through the night because she was refusing food and water but around midnight, I got her to lick some canned food off my fingers and she's been demanding food every 2 hours since. She's unbelievably small, less than a handful.

I fear I've turned into a crazy cat lady.

That is too awesome.

Bless your heart. That's a wonderful story, and a beautiful kitty.

That is a pretty little kitty--may she bring you much feline affection. May the jackass who aimed for her burn in hell, and may nothing but good things come to you, the traffic break man and Monty.

I don't often comment on kyoot factors, but that cat is off the chart.

Oohhhh! what a cutie pie. And what a wonderful thing you did, jamaro.

Ohh, tiny baby. Thank goodness you saw her and had the heart to rescue her. She won't count towards crazy-cat-personhood for a while, anyway. Definitely under the weight limit to be considered a whole cat.

Squeee! She may be old enough for solids but just not know how. Have you got a heating pad handy so she can stay warm?

That sounds so scary, curses on that jerk that tried to run her over.

I hope that person goes to the special hell where he/she is violated by a demon wearing a strap-on shaped like a real male cat's penis.

And you will be in the good place where you will be loved by fluffy kittens forever who never turn into cats that will disdain you.

(I tried to rescue a box turtle once. A jerk with his car got to it first. I'm still enraged over it years later.)

What a cute little thing....you get premium superfancy whuffles for that!

That's truly god's work right there, it doesn't get much more humanitarian than rescuing a small, helpless being from traffic. She's beautiful.

Aww, thanks all. Monty (so named because she was picked up a mile from Montague Expressway) is eating an astounding amount of food, scampering hither and yon, and will go for her first set of vaccinations this week. She also allowed me to have 5 hours of sleep last night (groan).

(Video of her second day).

(bunnyfire, I tried to rescue a painted turtle, and an idiot ran it over right in front of me. I still hate that bast***.)
