Tour of California Filter, personal edition →[More:]
Today the Tour of California had a stage from Davis, where I grew up and went to college, to Santa Rosa, and passing through another town I lived in, Calistoga. Essentially the first 30 years of my life was spent in this region, and I raced bicycles starting when I was 16 for the local bike club, sponsored by Peugeot. The route they rode today is on roads I spent a LOT of time riding on. The Davis to Winters route I've ridden in the thousands of times. It was the basic daily ride, and the route we took when heading to the coastal range for the hills. A standard ride was up "Cardiac Hill" which is just past Monticello dam (one year, during the double century, a guy died of a heart attack on it, but it already had it's name by then), and an area where the Zodiac Killer had a couple of encounters. The ride over Mt Howell Rd through Angwin is beautiful, if not painful. I've ridden most of the Northern California route, and it brings back tons of memories of the area, and of cycling there. Never mind me, I'm just reminiscing. It happens when you get old...
