Crap - They're changing my email address from verizon.net to myfairpoint.net. Myfairpoint? WTF![More:]I wish they would stop all this "my..." stuff. If it were mine, I'd call it something else, thank you very much.
Do you have an away team?

ugh, annoying. time to buy a domain. i've had one for 10 years and that way no one can ever change it on you.

gmail. So, you're in Maine? We're overdue for a meetup.

Vermont. Funny thing about the Fairpoint takeover from Verizon. The first news I heard about it all seemed to indicate the regulators were skeptical and against it. Then no news for quite a while. Then suddenly it was a done deal. I was pissed. Not that I love Verizon, but, "the devil you know is better than the devil you don't..."

I do have a gmail, but mostly I just use that for online stuff, which I try in vain to keep separate from my "real" quote unquote life.

Not sure how it relates, but I always thought "away team" was a very odd term. I sometimes wondered if they were really saying "O-A team", leading to the mystery of what O-A stood for. /random.

One of the things I do with domains (since mine come with unlimited mailboxes)is to set up new mailboxes for just about everything. Netflix? New mailbox. Amazon? New mailbox. Etc.

Then I can set up Outlook rules to sort incoming mail based on the account it goes through. Plus, if I don't want mail from somebody, then the mailbox goes poof!

Yeah, definitely a good reason for your own domain.

Although domain-buying can on occasion get slightly addictive, and something you have to be careful not to do too much when drinking.

I second the fun with temporary mailboxes fun with your own domain!
Get a .org or a .net if you have a nickname/idea for something that you could use for a long time. If I could spell my blasted surnname on the web, I'd get that). But I can spell my daughters so I got her the .com and the .net for her third birthday (file under: gifts three year olds don't get). Miklas had both his nickname and his real name but let go of the nickname after a while.

The nice thing about setting up separate email for everything is it allows you to find out who is selling your info even when they say they won't (United Airlines).

Yeah exactly! (Ning.com!)

I actually bought some hosting recently that comes with a free domain name. Haven't done anything with it yet, but the separate mailbox thing sounds interesting. Still need to think of a good domain name...

kewldomain.com is available.

Thirding temp mailboxes and giving everyone a unique email (though sometimes it causes confusion for CSRs, "Your email is the name of my employer, whaaa?")

And yeah, finding out who sold you out (800.com!)

And I do have some drunk domains. One of these years I'll let those lapse.

Looks like others have stated this already, but I'll chime in... use a third-party free email and not your ISP. Saves you time and headaches down the road when you inevitably 1) hate them so much you switch, 2) they merge.
