Ask Me Answer Junkies, can you answer me this? Where is this place [see inside]? I cut this photo out of a magazine at some point (bad quality, so I guess it was some sort of Sunday newspaper magazine supplement or something), and I'd love to know more about this fish door churchy place and find out who built it. This wonderful church is on Sri Lanka. I caught it out of the corner of my eye and hit the brakes to investigate. You never know what you'll see next on an Asian biking tour.

Also:

He guided us to the remote fishing village of Mankenyia that had been prosperous enough before the Tsunami to have built a solid stone church 1,000 yards or so from the sea. The church's entrance door was an ornate fish mouth that swallowed up believers as they entered to pray.

evilcupcakes, I love you!

that second quote one is the only google result for "Mankenyia" - I wonder if the spelling is correct?

Trying to find more on this, but no luck so far - how on earth did you come up with this?????

List of Sri Lankan Villages
Sri Lanka Place Name etymology

It seems more likely to be spelt Mahnkeniya or even Mandeniya. (which appears to get hits)
The search for mandeniya took me here. It's a big list of places in Sri Lanka.

I'm also not convinced it would be called a church. It looks more like a picture of a "stupa"?

mankanai seems to be a good option.
