Ask not what your country can do for you etc etc etc... [More:]So, in the spirit of Obama Day, what charities, volunteer opportunities, or community projects are you interested in working on? Doesn't have to some big lofty "save the world" thing, just wanting to know what anyone else is doing or plans on doing.

For me, I used to volunteer as a guide at the zoo, until my schedule pretty much ruled it out. I am interested in getting more directly involved with LGBT rights (you know, rather than couch ranting about it endlessly). Not sure from there.
I don't expend effort unless I'm being paid, son. If they want a 'day of service,' maybe the government can act like public servants instead of what they are: the public's master.

"Ask not what your country can do for you etc etc" Scary words those.

If the state does not exist to serve the people then the people need to rip down the state.

My therapy work right now is all volunteer. So, I'm serving as a volunteer grief counselor at the local hospice, which provides free counseling for anyone who's experienced a loss, and I'm applying to volunteer at the local community counseling center, which provides low-cost sliding-scale therapy to individuals, couples, and families with low incomes.

I'm going to keep on doing what I've been doing for the last 22 months--trying my hardest to thwart my toddler's constant attempts at destruction.

You're welcome, people of Earth.

Interesting answers, especially since I wasn't asking what you were planning on giving the government, more trying to find out what people were willing to do for other people in some seriously trying times, no matter how small. The title of the post was just a failed effort at buzzword snark.

"find out what people were willing to do for other people in some seriously trying times" Not much new for me.

I will continue to make micro-loans and support a couple of animal rescue and adoption outfits and, donate to, and very occasionally cook for, a homeless shelter. I'll keep it up as long as I (we) can as we are heading disaster ourselves.

I want to see first what Obama does for me, and that bar is pretty damn high.

The best thing I can do for my country is to be productive and not a moocher. Let's hope Congress doesn't make it impossible to continue. The ratio of producer:moocher is already dwindling.

I think I'm going to take a look at how I use my time on the weekends and see if I can carve out some time to do stuff with nycares.org. ^_^
