My husband has to lay off two of his employees today. [More:]He's a senior manager in a small company and the owner has decided to lay people off due to the economy. My husband feels absolutely horrible about this; he's never had to "fire" anyone before.
Oh, sad.

Yeah, that must have been difficult. Especially with the company being small.

I am wondering if they have procedures in place, such as senority, etc. It's still horrible but that would make it easier and less "personal," although it would still be cold comfort for those who have been kicked to the curb.

One of them is an immigrant here on an H1B visa, so I'm not sure how that's going to work out for him if he can't find another job quickly. I think that's what my husband feels the worst about - this guy (and his family) could get deported.

Has he looked at all the options? Cutting the hours of everybody, everybody taking a small pay cut theirself to retain both (what an Obamaistic concept! Think of the publicity and sales potential the company could pull out of such an altruistic methodism...), or asking each one if they might have something else on the horizon?

Office or manufacturing jobs?

It's a software company. The remaining staff is already taking pay cuts. Unfortunately, it's not my husband's call, and the owner is kind of a hothead.
