I'm a (sort-of) aunt! [More:]

The GF's sister went into labor on Tuesday. She wasn't due until the second week of February. They tried to get the contractions to stop but no dice -- the kid wanted out. On Thursday they did a C-section and delivered the little guy. He was only at 28 weeks, but seems very healthy. He weighs 2.5 pounds.

It was kind of scary that she went into labor so early, but things worked out, it seems. The alternative was for pregnant mama to lie flat on her back in the hospital for 6-8 weeks, which just sounded awful.

But hey! I'm a not-quite-legal aunt! Yay!
I hope she names him Tyrone.

Aww, congratulations, and I hope the little chap does well. Let's hope he develops some patience at some point :)

Congratulations, 'pups! Poor wee baby. It is absolutely amazing what they do with preemies these days. My sister had to lie flat in the hospital for a month before my niece was born (and she was still 6 weeks early, IIRC). It WAS miserable and the time my niece spent in the NICU was rough. Not so much because the baby was in danger, but because my sister and BIL didn't quite know what to do with themselves. There's only so long you can stare at a naked baby under a heat lamp, yet it felt wrong to go home. They were really out of sorts. All's well now though and my niece is a healthy, on-track five year old.

Were you supposed to do a "meet the family" thing at Thanksgiving or am I misremembering?

Yep, met the folks. Despite all verbal warnings to the contrary, they were very pleasant and fun to be around. I liked them, they liked me. They flew out two days early to be with the new parents, so the weekend was cut short.

(And it was her mom who first called me an aunt. I was very touched.)

I can't think of a clearer way to let someone know that they're part of the family. That's really sweet. I'm glad it went so well.

Being an aunt has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life. You get to have a close relationship with a child, and you can have a wonderful positive impact on his/her life, and they're your family, yet you don't have to be the parent or the bad guy. I used to love taking my nephew to McDonald's and just letting him eat french fries for lunch, and having him sleep over, stay up late and watch a slightly racy movie ... it's all been so great. He's in college now, and he's an awesome young man and I like to think I had some part in helping him turn out so well.

Congratulations to you and I wish you and your new nephew many happy times together.

On a related note, daughter's new gf was around a lot over the holiday weekend. A real keeper. Although she lives in Portland, which is a good ways away from SF.

It was fun to be around them, though, and gf showed up for Tgiving dinner with LOTS of unsolicited contributions for dinner, like wine, dessert, etc. So she's got a huge gold star now.
