Anyone in L.A. in the market for an amazing dog? [More:]
I volunteered recently at a mobile pet adoption event for L.A. Animal Services, and there's one dog that I cannot stop thinking about. I would have adopted him myself, in fact, except that he was pretty aggressive with all but the most docile, tiny dogs, and so I didn't think he'd be a good match for our little Zippy.

He's at the East Valley shelter in Van Nuys. He was a stray, and has been there for more than 2 months... putting him in imminent danger of being put down. He's listed as a chihuahua mix, but I strongly suspect he's part terrier. He weighs about 20 lbs., is already neutered, and is between 1.5 and 2 years old. He is incredibly bright, eager, athletic, and sweet (including with children) -- he was very good at learning some basic commands, and has the amusing propensity to dance on his hind legs while waving his front paws around for surprising amounts of time. After a particularly fun round of playing in the leaves in the park, he crawled up on my lap and gave my ear a little kiss.

I seriously, seriously cannot bear the idea of him being put to sleep -- I am positive he would make a wonderful pet for the right home. I'm emailing and calling everyone I can (we went to Thanksgiving at a friend's house last night, and I made a plea over the dinner table for him!), so now I'm reaching out to Mecha to see if there's anyone local who is interested, or might know someone who is. (And if money's tight, I'll even pay the adoption fee myself -- that's how badly I want this little guy to find a home.)
Awww, that's sweet scody.

I got Saffron from the Boulder Valley Humane society, and I first saw her on their web site. I put a hold on her so I could go see her the next day, and when I was walking through the kennel it was so heartbreaking. As I walked by the dogs would come up to the glass. I remember one big adult dog that looked like he'd be a total buddy, you could just tell by his eyes. I found Saffron and she met Silver, and she was a total sweetheart, so she came home with us. It's hard for me to imagine how these dogs end up this way. They guessed that Saffron was 4 months old when I got her, and she too had been a stray. Spent time in a kennel in the town she was found, then she was transported several hours up here. I can't even imagine anyone letting her go, but then there are a lot of assholes in the world. Me included, but I happen to be an asshole that likes animals. I'm actually heading up tomorrow to the Humane Society to donate. I adopted Saffron the day before thanksgiving last year, and I thought it would be a good thing to do every year for the anniversary of her adoption.

Hope that little guy gets adopted!

What a cutie! Chihuahuas are great- so much personality, so loving and loyal. They can be a little overanxious and overprotective, but mixing with another breed might mellow that out a little. Good luck to him to find a good home.

Aw, eek & scody you guys are sweeties, man. I hope the poochie goes home with someone. Its so hard - knowing we just can't save them all, and one somehow always sneaks past the I'm-not-going-to-get-attached filter.

We just adopted our second rescue kitty last weekend. The cat we got a couple of years ago has been wanting a playmate, and we didn't like leaving him alone if we took the dogs somewhere with us. Both cats are really social, and have been having wrestlefests and eat together.

Keeping them X'd for Chuck.
