Ave Maria. To me, this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and this is the rendition of it that made me a fan, unbeliever that I am. [More:]

Jessye Norman is an operatic singer based in London, last I heard, but she was born in Augusta, Georgia, where I lived as a child. (Another famous Augustan: Hulk Hogan. It's not really a great town for the arts.)

I've read that Franz Schubert was a bit of a doubter himself, if not an outright atheist, when he wrote this tune. I love that he was able to find the emotion in religious belief, even while not feeling it himself. Being able to empathize with the emotions of people who may not even be like you is, I think, the kernel of what great art is about.
I met Jessye Norman about 20 years ago when she was having a few tax problems and consulted the law firm I was working for. Nice lady, although very much the diva.

For me Ave Maria reminds me of my Auntie Nellie, who died last year. Her favourite CD was of Ave Maria, with her son playing lead cornet with the Black Dyke Mills Band.

Here's the creepiest version.

I'll feel it when I see Slayer do it.

Wouldn't that be AWESOME?

Oh, that's too cool, Jan, that you met her.

BOP, a Slayer version would make me incredibly happy. And yeah, the castrato one is pretty eerie.

I know very little.

But I know this:

99.9% of the songs I am familiar with would be improved by Slayer covers.

Cuz, like, Slayer fuckin' rules, and stuff.

i don't think we have any idea what castrati really sounded like, because it's not like they've ever got recorded in the optimal setting of a perfected audio chamber/performance hall.

BOP: i had a friend who wanted a magic tape that played every song like it was by old rape and honey Ministry. Shows how long ago that was.

ethylene: Javier Medina is a Mexican male soprano who calls himself a "natural castrati". His voice never broke after leukemia as a kid. Have a listen - I think his voice is the closest to that of a castrati that we're gonna get today.

Lovely version, BP! Thanks. And yeah, a Slayer (or Ministry - Jesus did build their hot rod, after all) renditon would be awesome.

Oops, I mean castrato, of course. Please excuse me - it's 4am.
