Trashy pleasures... I just discovered True Blood. Whooeeee!→[More:] Gore and sex and accents. Love!
I read the books awhile back. I was stuck in a hotel all weekend and this show with cool credits came on and then the characters' names started sounding familiar...
Anyway- nice surprise.
I did get bored of the books eventually. I hope that doesn't happen with the show.
Haaa, I just found out about that show the other day. In my journalism class, we had to write reviews; on books, TV shows, whatever.
Three or four girls in the class did reviews on the Twilight series, romance vampire books apparently.
Two or three did reviews on True Blood.
Until then, I had never heard of either of them. Apparently they both have quite a big following!
i hear actual New Orleaners are very picky about people faking the accent, but it's somewhat diverse so one person's idea of dead on isn't someone else's. Faking Cajun doesn't usually turn out great.
So do you think they're keeping it or have they already sealed the deal to keep it going?
Have you seen any of the other new HBO shows?
Check out Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum mysteries, too, for more light snacks. They're ridiculously silly. I've read all of them, I think. I'm not sure because I read them all out of order.
For something else compulsively readable, but not particularly silly, (though it's got humor in it), I recommend Martin Cruz Smith. I just read Wolves Eat Dogs and liked it a lot.
I also just read Forever Amber, which was a hugely scandalous romance novel from the 40s. A fairly unlikeable, Scarlett O'Hara-esque heroine sleeps her way to the top, leaving a trail of enemies, affairs, and abortions, all while wearing the latest mid-1600's fashions. I enjoyed the first 500 pages but it became repetious after that. I still finished it, but I skimmed a lot.
And I read Gabaldon's "Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade," which was unfortunately pretty dull, even the sex scenes. She just doesn't do sex well, imo. I say this with all due respect, because I adore the Outlander books, but the Lord John series just isn't doing it for me.
ethylene, I don't have cable at home, so I'm always the last to hear about things. I just ended up catching this while I was compulsively flipping channels* in the hotel.
*This is why I don't have a TV. I have NO self-discipline around televisions.
