300 question personality test. [More:]

This month my sister saw a psychologist to be cleared for a job (she got the job, yay). He gave her a 300-question personality test. It had questions like, "Would you like to be a nurse?" "Would you like to be a florist?" "Do you think your father is a good man?"

I was intrigued.

I found this.
It doesn't appear to be the same one, but it's kind of fun because it gives a pretty thorough explanation at the end. It said my level of depression is high and my intellect is low. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I would not consider my level of depression to be high. It's a fun time-waster if you're into this kind of thing.
It tells me I'm an averagely-neurotic introverted un-conscientious person who appears to be well-educated but not intellectual.

In my defense, my mom thinks I'm handsome.

I answer no, yes, yes to the first three questions. What do I win?

I didn't agree to communicate courteously with the author, so it wouldn't let me take the test. I wonder what that says about me?

I'm averagely extraverted and agreeable, not very conscientious or neurotic, enjoy novelty, variety, and change, and am curious, imaginative, and creative. Also, I'm calm and a sloppy worker. My highest ratings were for self-efficacy and intellect, and my lowest were for emotionality and achievement-striving (very low, indeed, that one). I'm 71% cheerful.

The MMPI is pretty widely used for these sorts of tests, but it's more than 300 questions.
posted by occhiblu 19 October | 13:08
We were talking about it again and she said the test she took had around 500 questions but she only had to do 350-370, so maybe it was the same test.
posted by LoriFLA 19 October | 13:24
Ah, I was just reading that sometimes they do a shortened MMPI that's just the first 370 questions, so that fits!

I can't stand pre-employment psychological testing. Just sharing that. In California much of it is no longer lawful due to state laws.

Why? That looks like a pretty cool person to me, and you'd damn well know it, too, if your assertiveness weren't 21.

Teasing you... but seriously, do you think that those results are negative? They don't look that way to me. Nevertheless, I can see all sorts of problems with that test that asking basically the same question in slightly different guises over and over again simply won't solve. Like, maybe someone really does a lot to help others and contribute to causes, etc., yet always feels guilty about their own benefits in life. They might consistently respond that they don't do enough for/care enough about other people, even though they do much, much more than the average person - and these test results would reflect that the person is only so-so on altruism.

I answered "Neither Accurate Nor Inaccurate" on very many questions, and actually would have used it a lot more, because I'm not a switch that's turned only one way or the other. Sometimes I act in entirely contrary ways, yet it's still all pretty predictable if you know me well. Or take this:

"Complete tasks successfully?" Well... yes and no. I don't care much for tasks that I just do because I'm "supposed to" do those things. Sometimes I try to be disciplined and do stuff I'm not at all interested in, because I know I ought to... but I often fail to complete them successfully, because I just don't care that much. But if I'm doing something important that engages me, I'm definitely going to finish that task successfully. So how to answer? Since the world is full of tasks I don't give much of a shit about, I answer "Moderately Inaccurate", but the aggregate of those answers to the rephrased but identical questions forms a picture of me that is not really accurate... I can let all kinds of things slide, but I can also be work demon that pushes through and pulls everything and everyone together to get really challenging tasks accomplished. But why would I apply that to everything? I would be a shredded nerve.

So... This test shows you as much more depressed than you see yourself. Look at this question: "Often feel blue?" Well. Blue can come in many forms... a sense of nostalgia, looking at your children and seeing them growing up so fast and feeling happy yet sad about that, bittersweet feelings of autumn... all of those are kind of "blue" feelings that one may experience several times in a day, yet still be a perfectly happy person. So one answerer looks at that question and those like it, and thinks about those kinds of feelings and gives answers that are more affirmative than the answerer who looks at it and considers the question in terms of being sad to the degree that they can't be cheered up, or that they spend a lot of time crying.

The degree to which one examines the implications of each question will definitely skew the results; people who think more deeply about each question will probably have scores that are actually less accurate, I imagine, than a person who sees them more as "snapshots" that describe general tendencies.

Thanks, taz.

I think I only answered "Niether Accurate Nor Inaccurate" four or five times. I probably could have used it more often. Like you, I can't apply a single answer to every task. There are times when I can definitely complete tasks or take charge, but I wouldn't describe it as a constant trait. "Always busy" is a funny one. I equate busy with productive. I am not always productive. I waste a lot of time and do consider myself lazy at times.

I'm pretty OK with the results. I am who I am and I think it's fairly accurate.

I do feel very uncomfortable that my desire to succeed is very low. I am comfortable with the status quo. When I think about going back to school or furthering my career, I think, meh. I'm pretty happy now. Happy might not be the right word. Apathetic may be more accurate. I feel embarrassed that I don't want to challenge myself more.

And since I'm not a striver (I'm not a slacker either) I fear that my kids will not be strivers. Mediocrity bothers me even though I'm pretty mediocre.

And that's enough about me. :-)

i took it and i'm mostly average, except i'm high on openness and low on agreeableness.
i'm mostly surprised at what average is.

If they can't work out that I'm an arsehole in, say, ten questions, they have no business in the personality test game.

I can't believe I made it through the test:

*Your score on Extraversion is high, indicating you are sociable, outgoing, energetic, and lively. You prefer to be around people much of the time.
*Your score on Agreeableness is low, indicating less concern with others' needs Than with your own. People see you as tough, critical, and uncompromising.
*Your score on Conscientiousness is average. This means you are reasonably reliable, organized, and self-controlled.
*Your score on Neuroticism is low, indicating that you are exceptionally calm, composed and unflappable. You do not react with intense emotions, even to situations that most people would describe as stressful.
*Your score on Openness to Experience is low, indicating you like to think in plain and simple terms. Others describe you as down-to-earth, practical, and conservative.

I would probably describe myself as a bit more neurotic and a bit more open to new experiences.

I didn't have the stamina for the biggie, so I took the 120 question test.

Your score on Extraversion is low, indicating you are introverted, reserved, and quiet. You enjoy solitude and solitary activities. Your socializing tends to be restricted to a few close friends.

Your level of Agreeableness is average, indicating some concern with others' Needs, but, generally, unwillingness to sacrifice yourself for others.

Your score on Conscientiousness is low, indicating you like to live for the moment and do what feels good now. Your work tends to be careless and disorganized.

Your score on Neuroticism is average, indicating that your level of emotional reactivity is typical of the general population. Stressful and frustrating situations are somewhat upsetting to you, but you are generally able to get over these feelings and cope with these situations.

There's some marked changes from even five years ago. I was pretty much raised on the "sacrifice for others" diet, so my scores on Agreeableness would have been higher.

I also wouldn't have scored highly on the Assertiveness then at all.

And I'd have been way above average on the Neuroses.

Guess next I'll work some on the self-organization. ;)

Hard to believe that chrismear is more neurotic than I.
