It's time for me to come out of the closet. I actually kind of like professional wrestling. Yeah, I realize it's fake and silly and vulgar, but that's kind of the point. It's the closest thing we have to live action Warner brothers cartoons. [More:]When I was a kid my main men were Superfly Snuka and Andre The Giant simply because to my kid perspective they were so wild and freakish and badass. Me and my friends would try do the moves in eachother's backyards. We're probably lucky we didn't maim ourselves.

Among the current crop, my favorite is Mick 'Mankind' Foley. We appear to share a similar fashion sense, plus while he hasa wacko persona in the ring, he still radiates enough intelligence and self-awareness to keep it all fun. He's also written his own bios, two novels and a few kid's books, visited the troops overseas, done tons of charitable work and is a proud liberal Democrat. Attaboy, Cactus jack!

So, fellow wrestlemanaic mechazens. C'mon in and tell me your faves.

(note: I've recently been reading these two books about pro wrestling and it's appeal. they're both very smart and interesting)
Oh, dude, be not ashamed. I used to think The Junkyard Dog and Sgt. Slaughter were the greatest things that ever happened to America. I mean, Slaughter even had his own GI Joe character and action figure. Check out his awesome website! (flash)

MCT, I once was passed by Sgt. Slaughter's limosuine on the highway. It was painted camo. Fuckin' cool. JYD was pretty cool, too.

When I worked at the Waffle House in Pensacola years ago, I waited on Jake the Snake. He had steak and eggs.

I was a big fan of pro wrestling when I was a kid, and I'm still a little bit fascinated by it. Man, talk about willing suspension of disbelief. The whole concept of kayfabe, for one thing, and the way that little-kid me was completely oblivious to homoeroticism so blatant and overwhelming that I can't imagine how any adult can miss it.

During my undergrad years, some of my friends and I would spend hours making custom wrestlers in Nintendo 64 pro-wrestling games. Dragon-punching Guile is okay, but it can't compare to pretending to pretend to hit some guy who looks like an idealized version of your roommate with a folding chair.

(I like the from-parts-unknown guys, and the big fatsos. With Kamala, you got two for the price of one. I also like the Ladder Match blog, though dudes haven't updated in a couple weeks, and so it may have vanished as quickly as it appeared.)

Dude! Coming Out Day is tomorrow. This was a great opening act, though.

Pro wrestling had a bit of an impact on my developing sexuality in the 70s and 80s. Seeing some of these big ol' guys rolling around with each other set off all kinds of explosions in my brain. I always liked the ones with the goatees and hairy bods the best. Hacksaw Jim Duggan made an impression on me that gets me in trouble to this day. Redheads, rednecks, rawr.

From that Ladder Match blog: The Huck-Finn-ing of Hacksaw Jim Duggan.

BoPo, several of the younger guys I spoke to at work said that Hacksaw Jim was their favorite. The only gay guy I asked said Hulk Hogan, but admitted that he thought Foley was a cool dude, too. I'd highly recommend the Gorgeous George book I linked as well. I suppose like anything else, favorites here come down to either sex appeal or personalities.

and as bear-buf, I'm surprised you're not a Mick Foley fan.

Last year, my ex and I watched a video of Rowdy Roddy Piper and I gained a little bit of respect for him watching the video. According to the piece, he revolutionized pro-wrestling with his in-you-face interviews.

That's cool.

I was also a huge fan of GLOW when I was a kid, and though I realize now how cheesy it was, I also admit that I've always been a huge fan of cheese, so...

I'll also admit to having a theory in that people who like superhero comic books, people who like wrestling, and people who like soap operas shouldn't look down on each other because it's all the same damn thing.

Never heard of him, but if I had back in the day, yeah, I'd probably have been a fan. (He actually reminds me of Jim Henson, which is a good thing.)

Oh yeah, wrestling is a big homoerotic soap opera, or it was the last time I looked. Comics are a lot more nuanced these days, and are not as much about the muscly spandex-wrapped bods as they used to be. That was kind of a hangover from the 50's I think.

I've traveled to a foreign country (well, I drove to Tijuana) for the sole purpose of watching a wrestling card. Top that.

Didnt mankind retire, like 8 years ago?
He was my favourite too. When I lived in a house that had sky sports.

I've been wracking my brain trying to come up with the title of a pro rasslin' documentary that came out several years ago to recommend it here, because it's really good. Also really depressing to see the current (or then, really) state of Jake the Snake. But I can't summon it.

Pretty sure you mean Beyond the Mat, mct. And, yes indeedy, it's a very good documentary.

How old am I? I'm so old I remember when studio wrestling had an audience of two rows of folding chairs, and rest of the crowd was crudely painted on the studio walls.

Beyond the Mat is great. There was a retrospective of the life and career of Bret 'The Hitman' Hart produced after he died that was also a very good peek into the world of wrestling. And I also have to recommend Mick Foley's books - Have a Nice Day was a very enjoyable read.

I became briefly enamored of wrestling when I saw the Mankind v Undertaker 'Hell in a Cell' match, when Mankind fell from the top of the cage - sooo exciting. Around the same time (I think) Mankind had a match where he landed on a shitload of tacks. That man has balls.

I really enjoyed that era of WWE - Lita and the Hardy Boys, Mankind, The Rock, Undertaker - but I kinda lost interest after Lita was hurt.

Actually I think the tacks and Mankind falling from the top of the cage was the same match - he fell from the top of the cage onto a shitload of tacks. F*en awesome, either way.

Yep, that's the one, thanks.
