This is hardcore: Living on £1 a day.→[More:]I've gotten our food budget down to $300/month, and I'm always looking for ways to save. This lady has us all beat.
Too much Commercial Agriculture around here. If I went out to pick my own avocados, I'd be arrested for trespassing. Still, my rule of thumb is if I can't save 35% off a supermarket's "already super-low" prices, I'm not going shopping. (And it's gotten harder, now that most of the Sunday Newspaper coupons are for women's cosmetics and pet food) I've actually spent more than usual over the last couple weeks, but I am so stocked up on everything I just might go the next month on $2US a day (if I don't get lazy and visit any drive-thru junk-fooderies - which I will).
Ugh. We spend way too much on food. It's our main luxury, because we cook at home a lot. We never eat fast food, or processed crap (this may change in the next few weeks!). I justify our grocery bill for that exact reason.

I actually stopped clipping coupons about a year ago. I spend more, but I eat better. I was getting a lot of crappy food-in-a-box stuff. Processed salt and fat, basically. And stuff I wouldn't have bought otherwise. "ooh, $2 two boxes of cereal, and they're on sale!" might as well have set $5 on fire for as much as we eat cereal. Both ended up stale and tossed.
While I was moving, it was fast food & lean cuisine. Making soup today so I can eat it all week, since work is very busy. Either corn chowder or sausage, cabbage & potato.
