The only boxing I want to watch is Deontay Wilder's semifinal bout (and hopefully I'll get to see him in the final bout, too).

The kid's 6'7" and has only been boxing for two years. His right hand's a sledgehammer. He drives a beer truck for a living. He's a single father raising a baby born with spina bifida.

Plus, he's from Tuscaloosa. Reprazent, homie.

You just described jonmc to a 'T' (except the Jersey accent part, but a Noo Yawk accent is close enough).

Heh. Other than "skinny" (I wish!) and "Jersey-accent sporting" (perish the thought! My southern accent is as thick as kudzu on a sunny hillside), you're right on the money. And I go back and forth about boxing. I'm not a fan of what the sport has become, and I have deep misgivings about what it does to the people who participate in it, but there's an atavistic part of me that enjoys watching people beat the hell out of each other.

I'm actually less interested in Olympic boxing than I am in Deontay Wilder himself -- he's from "just down the road" from me and coverage of him in the local fishwrapper piqued my interest, so I'd like to see him do well. He's an unlikely Olympian (the only US boxer there without a personal trainer, for one) and kind of a throwback to the time when real amateurs competed in the Olympic games based on their skills and love for their sport. I hope he wins gold.

(But I also like SEC football, Frank Sinatra, Dungeons & Dragons, and even tofu. I am large, I contain multitudes. And I have much longer hair than jonmc. There's just less of it on the top of my head... )
