28 July 2008

I'm usually not much for wedding photographers. But I really like their work. Makes me want to move to Atlanta to get married. Nah, not really. [More:]There are a lot of shots I really like but I think the one with the bridesmaid drinking wine while holding two bouquets next to her head is one of my favorites.
I'm over the current trend in "candid" wedding photos- I think it tends to inflate the importance of every little moment, of spending too much to make sure every corner of every room looks "perfect". As Miss Manners said, "people spend a year putting on something that's a cross between the Academy Awards and a reality show; a romance movie about themselves." The old style of having everyone stand in a line and smile works fine for me.

That said, those are pretty photos.

I've got everything planned about my wedding, except for one thing. :|

What is it with photographers web sites and their awful flash navigation?

Also, these photos all look blown out to me, no?

I love wedding photography, too, miss lynnster.

But if I ever get married it'll be pretty casual and all about friends and the par-tay!

That's the new "cool" thing, DarkForest- bright white photos, like the wedding is happening in a stadium, or angels themselves are handling the lighting. This also helps to hide unsightly blemishes on faces, like zits- or noses.

it's called "high-key" photography, you can find lots of examples in flickr.

You know, we did a mix of staged and candid photography. And while the staged turned out quite nice, the candids were much more fun. See, the thing that nobody tells you about getting married is that the couple is not likely to remember much of the reception in crystal clear detail. That reception just speeds right along, turning two or more hours into something that feels like less than fifteen minutes.

So candids are great to capture moments of awesome during the whirlwind.

Like this one of me dancing with one of my Best Men

I didn't know there was a name for it! Interesting.

gad the flash in that site is sucktastic, whomever their web designer is should receive a swift head punching.

that said, regardless of theme (I honestly loathe most wedding photography), that individual has an amazing talent for framing, lighting (and especially natural lighting which is particularly refreshing to see from a wedding photog), detail and composition. Honestly, if if you want a great tutorial / exemplar of fantastic artistic portrait/candid photography, period, then please try to ignore the crappy flash and enjoy the site.

I think wedding photographers (having recently been involved in a search for one) must use flash to display their portfolios to prevent people from stealing them or something. It's the only thing I can think of, because ALL of them do it. Our photographers have it too.

I bet that's it. Pretty annoying for the rest of us!

I was just coming here to say the same thing misskaz did... I think they do it to try to keep people from downloading pics. It's not just wedding photogs, it's ALL photographer sites. I hate it.

I like these people's weddings pics, and they have a nice set of portraits in there as well.

ditto grabbingsand.

I got married what, two weeks ago? And I've already forgotten most of the reception, honestly - a combination of not eating, drinking, etc. It seems like all the guests stopped taking pictures around the same time as my memory stopped functioning - I'm glad I paid someone to stay sober and record the craziness near the end. I also really like the faux-candid shots she took of just MuddDude and I right after the ceremony - yeah, they're probably a little cheesy, but we look really happy and cute together, so whev.

it's called "high-key" photography

In my day anyway (film that is), high key and blown out were different things. High key just meant the photo is predominantly light. Blown out meant that details have been lost and compressed completely to white. High key was fine, but blown out usually more of a defect.

And there's really not that much wrong with flash in itself, but jeez, fix that navigation bar...
