Today the homeless (or semi-homeless) bought me lunch.[More:] I made about $25 in tips from a few regulars with big scores, so I treated myself to a lunch break of chicken fingers, jalapeno poppers and three pints of Bud draft at a dive around the block from work. Never let it be said that they don't contribute to the economy. The guy who owns the bookstore around the corner from us was there on his lunch break, too. he likes getting his load on midday, it seems.
Jalapeno poppers....mmmm....

(I thought of you today when I saw the pickled eggs at my favorite produce store.)

When I think of Jalepeno poppers I think of these. I know jalepeno poppers are battered and deep fried. They are good, but these are the yummiest. My friend made them for Cinco de Mayo with a twist. She added blackberry jam. Or, maybe it was raspberry. Whatever it was, it was delicious. Jam, cream cheese, bacon, and jalepeno. Good combo!

I went to place once that had shrimp stuffed roasted jalapenos wrapped in bacon with a tabasco sour cream dipping sauce.

Also, I aced the candy bar quiz posted on MeFi this morning, with the predictable side effect that I now want to binge sample one of each, except Charleston Chew because eeeeew.

Incidentally, have I shared my too-recent revelation of the best way to eat a KitKat? Instead of breaking off those stingy little individual bars, you turn the bar to the five skinny little butt-ends are facing your mouth and chomp down on the whole thing. It's gratifying.

Wow. I might need to go get a candy bar.

Hee! On a scorching day a few weeks ago, I had my first ever Windex-blue slushy. It turned the inside of my mouth cyan. FOR HOURS.

The pizza delivery guy looked at me kinda funny.

You can hardly find a really hot jalepeno anymore...the Aggie mild version seems to have taken over in every Mexi-style restaurant I've been in in a long time. As someone who occasionally enjoys the scalp-peelingly hot pepper, it's disappointing.

I too mourn the loss of the spicy jalapeno.

While we're at it, does anyone care to weigh in on various popper stuffings? I can't decide whether I like cream cheese or cheddar best. Cheddar has more flavor, but the texture is subpar. Cream cheese is nice and creamy, but doesn't have much punch, and it often burns my tongue to the point of rawness.

Oh yeah, cream cheese is the way to stuff a pepper popper.

Speaking of stuffed peppers, we sometimes make an un-fried one that's yummy: you make tuna salad with diced apples instead of pickle relish, and stuff it in hollowed-out jalapenos. MMMMM.

Now I'm craving jalapenos.

Normally I prefer the cheddar-stuffed version when I'm eating at a bar, or whatever. However, I live in a primarily Mexican neighborhood, and there's this one delivery place that make their own, with huge peppers (2" at least), Chihuahua cheese, and breading. So juicy that dipping them in anything is totally superfluous.

Side note: when I got my first paycheck from the new job I celebrated by buying a large box of jalapeno poppers at the grocery store, true story.
