If we can't get near metachat.com, how about .metachat? If ICANN is going to allow a landrush for TLDs (which always sounded to me like a cross between TLC and STD), then we have to be prepared to carve out a little bit of safe territory, right?

Best case would have somebody convince Mathowie to put up the big bucks for a .meta TLD (.mefi? not so good), and you know the Anime maniacs would get .mecha ahead of us... Still, the possibility of a domain name suffix that designates the site as being ONE OF US is so tempting when you're part of a gen-u-ine web-based community.

And, before this happens, I MUST overcome my Domain Name addiction, or get myself permanently locked in a cellar.

Okay, Wendell, I put you in charge of acquiring .metachat for us. As to this minor detail:

Officials at ICANN ... said they expected the initial fee to be less than $100,000

I haven't quite decided who gets to handle that. Volunteers?

taz, I expected you to put me in charge of fundraising too. I HAD seen the price tag (which was why I suggested getting mathowie to acquire .meta), and while I acknowledge that it would cost LESS to buy metachat.com, there is so much more we could do with a TLD. And a contribution to the TLD fund could be considered a pre-payment toward getting a domain on that TLD (and I think I am starting to take this whole thing too seriously so I'll shut up now)
