Alejandro Escovedo I just got back from seeing his show at the Three Rivers Arts Festival. [More:]I've seen him perform a pretty quiet show in a club before but he had a full band for the festival and sounded great. I realize that tex-mex-post-punk with a string section is hard genre for the record industry to sell but this guy should be way bigger than he is.

My favorite thing about summer is all the free concerts to go to. So far this summer I've seen James McMurtry, The New York Dolls and Escovedo. Hopefully I'll have time to see the Old 97s with the Watson Twins and Juliana Hatfield in Schenley Park on Friday. John Hiatt is playing a free show in August that I'll try to catch.
Alejandro puts on a hell of a show. I've only seen him in clubs, but he'll be here on the 4th at a huge outdoor fest, so I'm glad to hear that his sound works in the big outdoor setting. I'm really psyched. Did you do a Mott/Ian Hunter song when you saw him - I know he has quite a catalog of Ian Hunter songs to pull from.

And I'm not a big Old 97s fan, but the Watson Twins and Juliana Hatfield is a great double bill in it's own right!

Slack, he did a great version of the Mott song, "I wish I was your Mother".

octothorpe,

Thanks - I really enjoyed the video. I hadn't followed his career since Rank and File. I just read his Wikipedia entry and, boy, I'm glad he made it.

That is so cool. I know he's even covered some non-lp Ian Hunter songs, so you never know what you'll get. And I just noticed that I asked "Did YOU do a Mott/Ian Hunter song...". So, while you were watching Alejandro, did YOU perform any Mott/Ian Hunter songs? And if so, didn't the crowd get sirt of pissed? :)
