What's FF 3 like? I want to take the plunge but [More:] Does it bork all of your extensions for a while like always?

I never quite understood how add-ons don't work with a newer version...whatever happened to backward compatability?
Yes, I had to uninstall it and go back to 2.0.0.14 because none of my favourite Add-ons worked.

MOST ADORABLE GAME EVER--oh, you're talking about Firefox. In which case I have no idea, sorry.

Thanks EJ, you saved me at least a half hour of wasted productivity.

Hmmm -- all my add-ons (save for UnPlug which I never use anyway) works for me. I currently have Better Gmail 2.0, Context Search, a plug-in for my university library, NoScript, and some other stuff on my home computer I can't remember right now). All seem to work just fine, but, of course, YMMV.

All of my stuff works. I run about ten add-ons. A few weren't caught by the add-on checker and I had to go and manually get them from the FF site or from the website of the person who made it. The only weird thing I've noticed is that gmail has unstyled buttons on it now [the Mac-like sort of shiny plastic-looking ones] and I have to figure out how to get those the hell off. That is probably some level of user error. Otherwise with the skin I was using [GrApple] the browser looks pretty much the same. Typing into the address bar will now find you URLs AND titles of web pages in your history that match.

Also I'm pretty sure this is right... when you update, your passwords that ff stored will be safe but your past history vanishes immediately which is sort of a drag. If there was something you were saving in there, bookmark it.

My extensions have worked, and mostly the experience has been fine...

For extensions I have foxytunes, colorpicker, greasemonkey, google notebook, and some timer thing.

I've used the Nightly Test Tools for years to keep the add-ons working even when they didn't want to. It's never caused me any serious harm, usually the incompatibility is just in the string that the developer sets to tell the browser what versions it supports. Add-on developers seem to be a conservative lot and error on the side of caution when setting those strings.

All of my extensions work, but I only use about six anyway.

You can turn off extension checking. I had at least a couple of them that were "broken" but once I turned off the check they ran fine.

I've been running the FF3 (on linux) since Beta 3, it's only crashed once (I know this because they changed the look and feel of the crash dialog and I was shocked when I saw it). This is in comparison to the daily crashes I had with FF2... YMMV, but for me it's a totally different experience.

The only hassle I had with upgrading to 3.0 was getting into the website to download it--they were *slammed* yesterday. Otherwise, the installation process was pretty much indistinguishable from upgrading from one version of 2.x to another. I think one of my extensions isn't working, but it's one I don't use much anyway.

And a tip for anyone who (like me) really dislikes the oversized "back" button in the upper left corner: just go to View-->Toolbars-->Customize... and then select "Use small icons" on the lower line. Reverts to a nice normal-sized icon, and shrinks down the Nav Toolbar, thus giving you more screen real estate.

Seems okay to me, but I don't use many add-ons. It feels pretty snappy on the work computer, which is on the old and slow side.

I took the plunge and I love it!

The only one that isn't working for me is Tab Mix Plus, which is kind of understandable as they tweaked tab behavior for this release. I'm about to go make sure there isn't a new version that FF's updater missed, but so far I think it's awesome.

By the way, simply editing the version range in the appropriate text file fixes the compatibility problem for a lot of extensions. You can also shut off version checking in FF, as togdon says.

And yes, there's a developer build of TMP that runs like a top, linked in the comment section for that extension's page. Word up.

I think it works great, loads way faster on the Macbook than the older versions. I run a few extensions, and all I got was a little popup that said "hey, these aren't compatible, d'ya wanat FF to go look for them?" I said "yes" and 12 seconds later they were all cleaned up.

so... not sure what that fuss is about unless some of you out there are using some really old / hacky plugins, but anyways.

the new tabs / default aesthetics are indeed ugly as someone else noted. but it took me zero waiting time to get onto mozilla.com and download yesterday so apparently I was just dumb lucky? well I'll admit to dumb.

bonus: my yahoo mail interface now runs seamlessly, where it was all b0rkified before in the Mac / FF combo yes, I know, i'm a luddite pud for using yahoo, I do have a gmail account but I have had the Y account for eleventyone years now and I are plain lazy about switching over...

I do not like the "awesomebar". I want a drop down of my recent browsing history, not my favorites or any "keywords" when I am looking for something there. I had one broken add-on, the rest worked fine (I use about 5). It is faster and a little friendlier in some ways. But not the "awesomebar".

For those who run Firefox off a USB drive (like I do most of the time) PortableApps already has the portable version out. (I haven't tried it yet... I don't usually upgrade anything for at least a couple of months after it comes out.)

The important addons - Adblock Filterset.G, Adblock Plus and NoScript - are all working fine. The secondary addons will be updated sooner or later. And even if they're not, it's no big loss.

Everything I actually use is working fine. I think it's hilarious that little add-ons from one guy are all updated, but Google and Yahoo Toolbars ... not so much. Maybe after they have a meeting or ten?

My history survived the switchover, going back to 6/10, so YMMV there, jessamyn.

Anyway, looks excellent, and feels snappier right out of the box, which is very nice. I've long felt that the Mozilla apps were great in everything BUT performance, so that may finally be changing.

OH HELL YES. They did improve the Javascript -- Gmail now loads about twice as fast for me.

I'm going to wait a little bit longer so add-on issues can be solved. For one of the ones I use the most--Delicious Bookmarks, the new FF3-capable version has some annoying bugs. I rolled back to the previous version and I wish I knew how to set Firefox to stop asking if I wanted to update it. I guess I will turn all add-on updates off for now.
