What should I wear when shopping for a wedding dress?→[More:]I was just going to wear jeans and whatever, but then I thought, am I supposed to bring nylons? Heels? Help me, I'm a tomboy!
You want support. You'll probably be wearing supportive, but pretty, undergarments on your wedding day, try to mimic this when you try on dresses. I wouldn't worry about nylons. Wear a good supportive bra and underpants that hold you in a little. Nothing too flimsy. No thong or g-string. Nude briefs would be good.
The shops should have shoes with heels to let you borrow to try on with the dress. If you think they won't, bring the appropriate height shoes you anticipate on wearing.
Jeans are a pain to change in and out of, same w/ sneakers. Wear clothes that are easy to change. Bring heels if you plan to wear them, as that will give you a better sense of dresses. Bring a digital camera so you can take comparison shots.
Meh on the heels, unless you already know exactly what pair you're wearing.
If you don't wear a backless, strapless bra, they'll probably give you this gross loaner one that won't fit right, so if you've already got a bra like that, I'd suggest wearing it.
Definitely wear clothes that are easy to get into and out of - sandals, elastic waistbands, etc. I do this when I know I'm going clothes shopping (I've never shopped for a wedding dress *sob*).
It doesn't matter what you wear - if you are trying on numerous dresses at one place, you only have to take off and put back on your outfit once.
Bring any jewelry you already know you will be wearing, if you have something to go on your head, bring that too. The provided bra and shoes fit me well enough to gauge, but if you have a bra and shoes already that you know are going to be worn with a dress, bring those too.
Otherwise, don't worry - but make sure to bring a camera so you can get pictures of dresses if you aren't quite sure which one to pick. I found that helpful, back in the pre-digital age to bring a polaroid :-)
I went shopping a couple of years ago with a friend for her dress, so I nth the advice for the heels (of whatever height you think you'll probably wear -- they obviously don't need to be the actual pair) and good foundation garments (to use my Tim Gunn voice).
Thanks, it went swimmingly today. It didn't matter much what I wore since I was in my panties and bra between dresses anyway. I didn't do heels because all the dresses were extremely long anyway (I'm a size 2 and the smallest size they had was 6). I've narrowed it down to 3 dresses and will probably pick one next weekend. I can't believe this tomboy picked such girly-looking princess-type dresses, but I feel amazingly gorgeous in them. One of them even has embroidered flowers. OMG.
