If one had a semi-crappy office chair, and this office chair had semi-crappy armrests that were adjustable both for height and for how angled away from one's body they were, and one somehow managed to push one of the armrests out so that it was now pointing 30 degrees or so away from one's body rather than pointing straight forward, where, pray tell, might one find a button or lever to move the armrest back? [More:]Cuz I've been fighting with this damned thing all morning and I'm definitely losing the battle.
You people are no help. You just want me to live with a screwed-up office chair, don't you? Sigh.

Hmm. Okay, I presume you've already looked in the logical places (say, under the armrest, at the base of the little armrest stand thing, etc.?), and it's not there? What happens if you just try to (gently) shove it back in place?

I still haven't figured out the chairs in our office. We have adjustable chairs AND tables and since we like to fuck with each other and move things around, it's horrific to find a chair and table that match at any given time.

Seriously guys, I have my photocoping chair over in the corner like a dunce chair for a reason.

I definitely moved it out of position by not-so-gently shoving it, but I've had no luck manhandling it back into place. The one lever/button/thingy I can find is the one that adjusts the height.

So I can make it short and sticky-outy, or tall and sticky-out, but no luck on undoing the sticky-outiness as a concept.

Stupid chairs.

In only tangentially related office news, my counseling skills just came in handy with the CEO, who wandered into my office wanting advice. I mmm-hmmed and uh-huhed and "What's your actual concern?"ed for a few minutes, he talked himself into a decision, and walked out thanking me for all my advice.

People are weird.

Sounds like you need to karate-kick the armrest back into place.

I'm wearing a skirt and heels. And the chair is on wheels. It just might be worth it.

AH HA HA HA!

The correct answer was: "Sucker punch it."

Success! And my new weight-training program is obviously paying off.

I was going to (before my wirelss connection vanished) say that you have probably bent the arm out somehow, rather than adjusted it out. Is there a bolt or screw missing from the bottom of the arm? Look under the seat where the arm support disappears and you might find that one has dropped out.

There's not a screw missing, but I'm guessing it's loose. It looks like the arm is not supposed to move except when that screw is unscrewed.

It's moved before, however, and I didn't hit it particularly hard to get it out of place, and there is a groove that looks like it's creating a range of motion for adjusting the arms.

I am trying to come up with a way to conclude the previous run-on sentence and failing. I think I was getting to a point, but I've forgotten what it may have been.

Oh! Right. That it doesn't seem to be bent, per se, just loose.
posted by occhiblu 14 May | 17:10
Yeah, just as I thought - you have a screw loose ;-)

I first read that as, "If one had a semi-crappy office affair."

I am mildly disappointed that it's about furniture.

And my posting of real-time updates of fights with office furniture wasn't enough proof for you? :-)

Danf, I actually kept reading it that way, too. Must be the double Fs in "office"? Or something? Huh.
