Nothing but Flowers Slideshow of old Tiger Stadium in Detroit.[More:]Saw a game here once, memorably, when I was 25 and spending the summer in Michigan. It was the 4th of July, a really hot dry day, en evening game, and we drove into Detroit and parked. The stadium was loud and large and in the center of the most blown-out urban landscape I've ever seen - acres of empty lots full of broken glass and weeds. We walked a few blocks, passing a totally abandoned Gothic church with every piece of stained glass broken. But the stadium was filling up -t was a ballgame! We had bleacher seats, meaning that we were featured on the JumboTron as "Bleacher Creatures," and we drank warm expensive lousy beer and ate snacks. The game was against the Mariners, and a sudden rain squall soaked the field somewhere around the end of the 7th, but it passed and the game continued, wetly. The Tigers blew an early lead and looked like they were going to go down, but in the bottom of the 8th they got 2 runs in and stole it back, ending the game 8-6. Man, was the crowd happy about that. We stayed in our seats for an after-game fireworks show, which was set off from the field. It was a great show, featuring these spinning pinwheels that emitted showers of sparks, and the most dramatic moment came when one of the pinwheels shot right off its base and went zooming straight into the stands. And nobody got hurt!
Sad.

I have fond memories of that place from the late 1960's to early 1970's. I went to a few games there as a kid growing up in the 'burbs. I remember being pretty young (7 or 8?) and being more fascinated by the passed out drunk in the bleachers near us than with the game. Al Kaline, Bill Freehan, Norm Cash...

A trip to Tiger Stadium always meant a trip to Buddy's Pizza also. I like old ball parks, glad I got to go Wrigley about 10 years ago.

It is sad. Hopefully they can salvage every last scrap so it won't go to waste.

And I loved your story, Miko. Baseball games are so much fun. I love to people watch and the music and everything about it.

I spent one of the most perfect days of my life in Tiger Stadium on Labor Day, 1995.

I live in this area and love Tiger Stadium. I hate to lose a piece of our history, but I also hate to see it not being used.Every time I drive by it looks more delapidated and I wish they would take it down.

It looked dilapidated even before it closed. I think they ran it down on purpose to make the case for the new stadium.
