A Summer Blockbuster Deadpool (of sorts.) Place your bets inside (but beware li'l potential Iron Man spoilers.) [More:]

Which big budget summer flicks will disappoint?

I've already begun with Iron Man. You've seen the trailers? The rockin' dogfights with F22s? The funny laboratory scenes? Then you've seen 95% of the goody bits of the film (although they were pretty good.) And that's despite great CG, as well as cool performances from Mr Downey (Jr) and the improbable Gwyneth Paltrow.

(Okay, the armor itself rocks. Nicely done.)

How about the new Indiana Jones? Spileberg! Lucas! The return of the wondrous Karen Black! Cate Blanchett!

And a graying Harrison Ford on camera without dying his hair!

But the movie is already hocking every product known to man (and woman), like a hoarse screaming vendor selling used rugs in a Turkish market (through which, of course, Indie comes running, chased by evil villains.) This does not bode well. (...despite Spielberg's use of the best storyboard artist on the planet, of whom I've been a fan since I was a tot.)

How about Hellboy II?

Nah, nevermind. This had just better rock.

Speed Racer?

Wachowski Bros. Susan Sarandon. Ms Ricci and Mr Hirsch. Nice lookin' animation.

Nah, I can't afford to bet a nickel on this one's obit.

But how about the Incredible Hulk? Ghaaaah. Even the CG looks ghastly (as usual.) At least it's not dragging Ang Lee's career down with it this time.

But wait! Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth! And LOU FERRIGNO!
;-)

And Norton insisted on re-writing Zak Penn’s screenplay, and now is fighting Marvel on the final film edit!

Whoa. L-O-freakin'-L.

Okay: Your thoughts?
There is nothing here I pay to see. I will watch for Hellboy on the movie channels.

Iron Man was pretty much exactly what I expected. Average action/effects movie. Good points: didn't waste too much time on pretentious angsty bullshit. Bad points: utterly predictable plot even by action movie standards.

People do seem to love it though, and I don't quite know why.

I went to see it with the same guys I saw Cloverfield with. That film I loved and they hated: I liked the way it had a new angle and slightly unpredictable plot; they came out grumbling and mumbling. With Iron Man they came going "Wow! Amazing! Brilliant!"

So basically I have no idea. I suspect I'll like Speed Racer because it looks a bit different, but it'll be a modest success at best.

I suspect the critic's choice among the blockbusters will remain Iron Man, and the big earner will be Indiana Jones. Unfortunately, the trailer lacked spark and I have my doubts over whether the magic of Indy can be truly recaptured.

Dark Knight will outearn, in order, Hancock, Hulk, Speed Racer and Hellboy 2. Prince Caspian, in the family market, will edge slightly ahead of Hancock in by a nose, and Wall-e ahead of that, putting it just behind Indy for highest gross. Wall-E will also garner positive reviews, but many will be preoccupied with the dialogue.

I'm hoping Get Smart is funny.

Man, is it Remakes, Sequels, and Superheroes season again already???

The only one of those I'm actually going to end up seeing is the Indiana Jones movie and that is because my father LOOOOOOOOOOOOVES them. And it comes out the day after his birthday.

I think it's possible Sex and the City will disappoint. I can't believe the marketing effort- it doesn't come out for another 23 days, and I feel like I read something about it every day for the past two weeks. With all that hype, what movie could possibly live up? It'll still make a trillion dollars, though.

I can't wait to see Indiana Jones. What can I say - I'm a sucker for adventure flicks, especially Indy. Well, except for the second installment; that was way too depressing.

The mister will probably want to see all the comic book hero movies because he read comic book when he was growing up. I'll pass.
