Hey Americans! I'm going on a road trip into the states and I want to pick up some unique Canadian gifts for friends. Is there anything you suggest i should bring that you just cant get?[More:]
I'm going to bring down some boxes of Smarties.

Can you think of anything else that might make a unique gift?
Wry wit?

Citizenship (we may need a way out of here).

A tip for fitting in: Lay off the mayonnaise on the fries, it's a dead giveaway.

There was an AskMe thread some time back that had me salivating for all kinds of goodies, even for the ones I didn't recognize or understand. Aw, heck, especially for the ones I didn't recognize or understand!

I'm told you can't get Orange Crush in cans in the US. Bizarre, I know.

Oooh, drugs! Don't forget the drugs.

Motts Clamato.

Oh, and ice wine is apparently uniquely Canadian, though I'm sure there are vineyards in Upstate NY and Penn that could make it. But yeah, ice wine.

Poutine! Schweppes Ginger Ale! Lovable apathy!

Whatever a coffee crisp is, i want one.

hm. Aero or Coffee Crisp seem to be uniquely Canadian propositions. Thrills (the gum that tastes like soap) is another one, and if you have a good microbrewery near you, that's always a good call.

MMmmmm, poutine....I'm hungry.

Forget Orange Crush, bring Orange Swan!

Here's a photo the previous AskMe-er posted of her Great Canadian haul. I want all that stuff.

Uh, please.

Wee! A year and a half later, the goodies that stand out in my mind as being especially tasty were the Coffee Crisp and the Dill Doritos. Oh, and the Alberta Premium. I ended up giving away a lot of the chocolates because I'm more of a salty-crunchy snacker than a sweets snacker. Next time Elmer goes up, he needs to bring more chips.

The nanaimo mix sorta freaked me out. There was a bit of a disaster in making the first batch (um...or maybe it was just supposed to taste like that) and I recently discovered the other box still stored in the freezer. No idea if that's still good.

1. A butterscotch mikshake from White Spot.
2. Timbits
3. Trailer Park Boys DVD set

Timbits aren't good anymore since Wendy's bought out Timmy's. It's a sad truth.
posted by LunaticFringe 02 May | 18:39
This is as good a place as any to mention that I've always found the word "timbits" to be just a little disturbing. I don't want snack foods that smack of cannibalism.

Actually, there's a WICKED whiskey made up here. I was going to call it rye, until I saw the comment about that! Anyway, it's called FORTY CREEK BARREL SELECT (damned cut'n'paste all caps, sorry), it's very reasonably priced, and VERY VERY delicious. I think it's my favourite Canadian Whiskey going right now.

Oh and pick up some Weakerthans records, maybe some Rheostatics, I hear the new Teenage Head is great...etc.

SassHat, thank you. I just sent that thread to BOP as a wishlist. No Smarties? No HP Sauce? No fucking Aero bars or Kinder Eggs? I can see I'm going to have to plan ahead.

um, I may be grouchy but:
into the states and I want to pick up some unique Canadian gifts
would seem to indicate a compass with the letter "N" might be a good start.

Huh, vapidave? joelf is IN Canada, and wants to bring some Canadian gifts to his friends in the US. Is your grouchiness limiting your reading?

What a timely thread! I'm going to North Carolina in 2.5 weeks to visit an ex-pat Canadian friend. I had asked him if there was anything I could bring him, but he couldn't think of anything that didn't require refrigeration.
posted by Orange Swan 04 May | 22:29
Oh! Whatever you do *don't* bring the candied salmon (aka Indian Candy) available at the airport. I know it seems obvious, but the local stuff required refrigeration and I was facing 18 hours in transit, so I thought 'how bad can it be?' It can be bad. Bad to the point that your American friends are looking at you funny wondering why on earth you went on and on about the stuff, and desperately trying to figure out ways to use it up without throwing it out.
