On the one hand.. I got told that they don't want to give me 4 days a week instead of 3.[More:]

On the other hand, I get called all day yesterday and today and have had to make 2 cross city trips for the job on my day off.

On the other other hand, when I make myself unavailable on my days off, I get yelled at.
This is why nobody should work for not for profits or political projects unless they have a close bond of trust and mutual-humanity-recognition with their colleagues, especially their superiors.

Sounds like they don't see why they should pay your for another day when you're already working for free.

If you don't want to refuse outright, try a bit of passive resistance. "Oh, did you try to phone me? The battery on my phone must have died..."

That is absolutely 100% true.

That is crap they're giving you. Just in case you didn't know. It would be lovely to believe that non-profits don't take advantage of their workers, but that world doesn't exist.

PS: "I can't make it in today. As you gave me the day off, I have other plans."

Yeah, stand up for yourself here.

Not everyone can get away with this, but I pretend I don't have a cell phone. My job hasn't got the number. They've got my home number, and if they call on a weekend, I screen it first to see what the big issue is. I've learned to draw some harder lines between On and Off when it comes to work. I still have more progress to make, but it's definitely a survival strategy when you work in places where too few people are doing too much.

I used to have this problem in my previous job and, while those saying you should put your foot down are absolutely right, it may not work. My previous boss would call me at any and all times of the day and night, including weekends and when I was on holiday. Not answering his calls meant an endless string of pages and text messages until I broke down and spoke to him. Because he owned the business and had absolutely nothing else in his life, he simply could not understand that not everyone felt the same way about work.

If this is a problem to you, you may have to consider that this is not the job for you. Not everything can be fixed.
