Why does my mother ask me really simple questions she could answer herself? [More:]She's pretty smart, more internet-savvy than the average 50-something, and she's got books all over the damn place. So why does she have to send me email asking if I know what's the closest airport to Cambridge? (Actually, I didn't know offhand that it was smackdab next to Boston, but 10 seconds on Google and I was done).
Because this way she gets to tell all her friends how smart her daughter is!

I think everyone has a subject or two that terrifies them, and rather than deal with trying to tackle it themselves, they outsource dealing with it to other people.

I only recently got my parents to stop signing their IM posts to me. I even got them hooked up with Skype so they can video chat with the baby. My father calls Skype "The Skype," which delights me to no end.

Because she wants an excuse to interact with you without it being some big deal.

Because she's wanting to connect with you in some way, and this makes her feel like she is.

I used to be so scared of insurance claims paperwork that I would send it to my dad to do. He finally told me to do it myself. (I was a college graduate, I had no excuse.)

Because after paying for all that education she's darn well getting her money's worth?
