Marching Band [More:]

So I'm watching college basketball this week, and it seems to me, that there is no more storied college band than Stanford's. Is there any other band out there that would cause a prospective student to actually seek out a particular college?

I'm not a musician, nor was I a high school band musician (that's another story, a pretty funny one, ok, I wanted to go to Europe Sophmore year, but couldn't hack the clarinet and got kicked off of Flags after Freshman year. Heh.)

And wasn't there some internet article about band kids in hs today having the most sex?

Anyway, let's hear from the band kids! You rock! Or, more probably, once rocked. Or some approximation thereof.
What no band kids here? I don't belive it.

I was in Jazz band, which meant I hated marching band, and it also meant I didn't get laid.

I wasn't in the band, unfortunately. I think band kids are cool.

I never knew this about Stanford's band. Thanks for the link, rainbaby.

I ran the marching band at college. We were called the Hampshire College Marchin' Band and I think we played mostly the St Patrick's Day Parade in DC, twice. We didnt' really have any teams at Hampshire, hippie school that it was.

We won a trophy both times for "most unusual" or something. We had electric guitars, a bagpipist, a kazoo section, a french horn and I'm not sure what else. The year I was in charge we played "sweet child of mine" "cult of personality" some AC-DC song and something else. This was in 1989 I guess. We had two formations that we called The Big Bang [everyone run everywhere] and something that was the opposite of that [everyone huddle together in the center].

I don't really play an instrument but I guess I sort of played snare drum in the band. When I was in Ann Arbor Michigan this week I met someone from MeFi [ulotricious] who met his wife in the tuba section of the UMich Marching band. They lived off campus in a house with other tuba players. It sounded fun, being in real band, but I was only in our fun but pretty overall "fake" band.

Am I really the only high school band nerd out there? Wow, I definitely thought there were more of us here.

I played bass drum in the marching band, except for when I could get away with playing mallets in the pit (which wasn't often).

I'll agree with the "band kids get laid the most" theory (well, not from my own personal experience, but definitely from what I saw around me). The tuba and drum section guys got the most, I think. The band at my school were the rock stars, though. People would crowd the stands during half time to watch the show and then leave as soon as the football started up again.

We were modeled after this band.

I almost got thrown out of a football game in Ohio (Logan Chieftains vs Athens Bulldogs) when I couldn't stop laughing at the Logan High School Marching Band's rendition of 'Smoke On The Water'. One thing you Do Not Do, I learned, is laugh at the high school band. But man, it was funny.

jessamyn! You go, girl! Sounds like the Scatter Band type of band, like Stanford's.

mosessis, it's probalby just a busy Easter weekend for peeps. (hah!) Don't feel alone.

The other part of my Band Went to France withouth me story is that my bff at the time, Kara, got tapped out of the blue by the Band Director to carry the banner. 5'3, fit the suit, etc. SHE went to France!
