19 March 2008

to add insult to injury... [More:]

As if this wasn't enough for one day, I got taken out by yet another inattentive driver as I was on my way home. You would think I would be on my guard for this nonsense, right?

*sigh* ...it's okay, I am fine, no real harm done, and honestly, I should know better than to get myself into a position where I can be 'pinched' by a driver turning right, but I destroyed yet another helmet and dinged the heck out of my knee. No major bike or bodily damage done (I fall well) but holy crap, what a day.

Hopefully I've got my annual (decadal? gad, I wish) quota of traumatic events done with in one fell swoop.

Here's a little something for you that the mister sent to me in response to my earlier rant.

Please, everyone, stay safe out there!

Oh, and I took everyone's advise and am doing nice things for myself. I went and bought a trashy novel, and I am now drinking wine and doing my taxes at the little italian-wannabee internet cafe up the street. Salud!

Holy crap, lfr. Sorry you had such an incredibly sucktastic day.

*gives lfr a hug and a nice cocktail/glass of wine, runs her a hot bath*

Oh no! What a day.

Glad you're ok. I have been getting a sneaking suspicion that somehow, sometime this week, everyone just turned stupid (myself included). I don't know what's going on, but things just all seem weirder than normal, or necessary. Be careful out there.

Oh my god, LFR. I am so glad you are OK. What a way to end the day. I read the other thread earlier today. Again, so glad you are all right.

To a safer tomorrow. ::clink::

I have been getting a sneaking suspicion that somehow, sometime this week, everyone just turned stupid (myself included).

So it's not just me? I have had four or five of my own forehead-slapping moments of utter dumbfuckery this week, and witnessed many more. Usually I notice this the first week after the time change. Maybe it's delayed reaction --- we're too stupid to be on schedule!

lfr, treat yourself well. Goodness knows you deserve it.

Oh, FUCK! That sucks, lfr.

Glad you're OK.

Please be careful out there.

Here in America, we hand out driver's licenses to just about every creature that walks on two feet and maintains a body temperature at or about 98.6.

I know that you have a lot of road experience and that you can handle yourself but again, please be careful.

I feel your pain, although I have no one to blame for that my myself. You have to be that much more careful on a bicycle. This is probably a good thread for me to read, though, lfr, because I haven't ridden to work in two weeks due to illness and weather, but I plan on riding tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up.

Big hugs lfr. I do hope tomorrow is better.

Man, what a day. I am SO glad that you and the text message victim are okay.

Sweet whuffles.

Hope today brings better things for you.
And, I have to add...
doing nice things for myself. I went and bought a trashy novel, and I am now drinking wine and doing my taxes at the little italian-wannabee internet cafe up the street. Salud!

doing taxes is nice??? Are you sure you don't have a concussion? ;^)

Take care out there!

It's hard. . . I bike around, but drive a vehicle for work. I have never hit a biker, nor made them take serious evasive action (some minor, OK) but it's sometimes impossible to see bikes, even if I am aware of them.

Most of my close calls have involved bikers who are not following the rules of the road, though, and it is a pet peeve of my to encounter cyclists who have such a sense of entitlement (I am saving the earth, man) that they feel immune from the laws of kinetics.

Thanks everyone. I feel pretty good this morning, so I'm not as banged up as I'd feared.

Doing taxes is nice when they take fifteen painless minutes of checking little boxes online, and you know you're getting a chunk o' change back.

danf, I totally know what you mean. In this case, I'm perfectly willing to take at least 50% of the blame, if not more - this is a situation that's just like getting 'doored', that I know I shouldn't put myself in. Even with a marked bike lane, turning right on a busy street has hazards. The driver simply didn't see me and cut the apex on the corner. There was probably some sand there too (since it's everywhere right now after our little snowstorm on Monday), I'm sure I grabbed a little too much rear brake, and WHAM, there I was. Ironically, I'd have been better off on the fixte and probably wouldn't have gone down; they're way easier to control in those situations, which is one of the primary reasons serious city cyclists prefer them.

I am sure you keep this in mind also, lfr. On bikes, we are not at the top of the food chain out there.

It's bikers who ignore this fact, due to their moral superiority for even BEING on a bike, that irritate me more than even oblivious Hummer drivers.

So, um, how many passes did the team in white make?

Can someone explain what they're talking about? || You know what my baby dog does everyday?
