American Idol: Beatles 2 -- The Butcher Cover [spoilers]
→[More:]
Here in the sticks of South Carolina visiting my family, Walmart and American Idol are pretty much the only entertainment around, thus this is my first season of watching the show, so...
For contractual reasons I am sure, the producers decreed that Beatles songs be performed two weeks running. I figure that of the entire library, perhaps overall 30 to 35 of the songs would be suitable for condensing to 1:40, from which 23 would be chosen.
It was a disaster, highlighted by David Cook choosing to redo Whitesnake's horrid version of "Daytripper". (I was a big fan of post-Purple Whitesnake, btw). I get the feeling that these kids are only getting one or two rehearsals with the full band.
I also get the impression that some of these guys are not really in it for the competition but for the exposure. With past runners-up scoring Grammys, platinum albums and even an Oscar, why knock themselves out trying to win? Perhaps this season,
American Idol is living up to its name.
