Padrino! I hung out with my 6-year-old godson yesterday and it was awesome.[More:]

We mostly just hung around the house as it was chilly and damp outside and did all sorts of amusing guy things, like building a giant Lego snake with an operable mouth, coloring tropical islands surrounded by submarines, and snacking on the cakes we (I went with the madrina, the god-mama) had brought.

The highlight of the day was definitely the moment we both bit into crackers with our cheeks touching and could hear each other's crunching! We both dissolved into giggles.

Even though I'm not particularly religious, it really means a lot to me to have the chance to be a mentor of sorts to someone with so much to learn. I feel responsible and mature, which is weird: I don't usually embrace my adulthood.

And a question for the gallery: when was the last time you hung out with very young relations? How did it go?
That is really nice, mdonley. I hang out with my young relations on a regular basis. I have kids. I think it's really nice you are actively playing and devoting your complete attention to him. Sometimes as parents, we don't hang out with our kids enough without having something else going or thinking about something else.

Men who are good with kids are the sexiest. It's a fact!

We had a houseful of nieces and nephews yesterday for my son's first birthday. For some reason, every kid who enters our house makes a beeline for the costume corner. So there was a viking chasing a ninja while a spider played foosball with a dragon and a princess. My mom played guitar hero against a tomato. It was chaos. I loved it.

My littlest is ill with a nasty vomiting bug, so while wifey held the fort, my 4 year old and I had a day yesterday hanging out together. We went to the shops and tried on hats, bought and ate some berries and individually named every single free stuffed toy dalmatian puppy in the whole shop's stock of limited edition 101 Dalmatians DVD boxes. Personally I thought "Alien Fish Girl" was a lousy name for a puppy, but I was tactful and kept quiet. Then we came home and played Super Mario Galaxy, after which she comprehensively flattened some grinning fool (not me) in Wii Boxing. Dinner, book and bed. Haven't had so much fun on a Sunday for ages.

I routinely go out on "dates" with my kids to make sure that they get dad time and to also get them away from mom for a while. Both kids have a lot to offer and date time can be a lot of fun. My daughter has recently decided that the word 'applesauce' is hilarious and likes to interject it randomly (usually in the phrase, "Um..daddy? Daddy? Umm....APPLESAUCE!"
